Thanks to a brilliance by Steve Smith, Australia cruised to a 7 wicket win in the 2 nd T20I match played at Manuka Oval, Canberra on Tuesday. Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and decided to bat first. Babar Azam continued from where he left in the 1 st T20I. The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Russia by 4-2 in the first leg of Olympic qualifiers played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Friday. Russia got off to a great start in the 3 rd minute but the shot was well saved by Indian goalkeeper P Sreejesh. Manpreet Singh went for a shot but finds the keeper. The Russian defenders interpreted, and Indian captain decided to review straightaway for tackle. The umpire decided to give a penalty stroke and Harmanpreet Singh makes it 1-0 in the 6 th minute. It was a good performance by both teams. At the end of first half, India led 1-0. It was a superb start for the visitors as Kuraev levelled the scores in the 17 th minute as sloppy from Rupinder Pal Singh costed India the goal. The Indian women’s team defeated higher ranked United States of America side by 5-1 in the first match of Olympic qualifiers played at Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar on Friday. It was an aggressive start for the Indian team in the first five minutes of game dominating the possession. In the 7 th minute, Alyssa Parker hit the shot wide off the post and India survived a scare. 3 minutes later, USA got another chance to score a goal as the shot went under the goalkeeper but could not convert. The visitors gained momentum which as another powerful shot went wide off the goal post. Lilima Minz was shown in the green card. At the end of first quarter the scores were 0-0. David Warner’s superb form continued as Australia crushed Sri Lanka by 7 wickets in the third and final T20I match of the series played at iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG on Friday. Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to bowl first. The decision paid off as Mitchell Starc got the breakthrough getting wicket of Niroshan Dickwella in the very first over. Netherland crushed the hosts United Arab Emirates by 8 wickets in the first play-off match played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Tuesday. United Arab Emirates captain Ahmed Raza won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Rohan Mustafa played a poor stroke dismissed by Klaassen in the very first over. The young Indian pair of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty went down fighting to world number 1 Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamujlio in two straight sets by 18-21, 16-21. RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty could not start off to perfect as the World number 1 did not allow the Indian pair to play with aggressive intent and took a 7-1 lead. The Indian pair fought back strongly to make a match out of it and levelled the score at 10-10. At the interval, Gideon and Sukamujlio had a slender 11-10 lead. Thanks to a maiden T20I century by David Warner, Australia started the home season with a record 134 run win in the first T20I match played at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Sunday. Sri Lankan captain Lasith Malinga won the toss and decided to field first. Playing his first T20I match after the ban David Warner struggled initially but Aaron Finch took on the Sri Lankan bowlers. It was an amazing start by both Australia openers as they scored 52 runs in the first 6 overs. After the power play overs, Warner and Aaron Finch took on the Sri Lankan spinners Lakshan Sandkan and Hasaranga. The Australian captain was severe and reached his fifty off 31 balls. In the same over Warner too completed his fifty with a six off 28 balls. Both blasted away against Sri Lankan bowlers.
