Netherlands qualify for World 2020 with a crushing 8 wicket win over UAE
Netherland crushed the hosts United Arab Emirates by 8
wickets in the first play-off match played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai
on Tuesday.
United Arab Emirates captain Ahmed Raza won the toss and
decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Rohan Mustafa played a poor
stroke dismissed by Klaassen in the very first over. Van Meekeren bowled with good
line and length which put the UAE batsmen under pressure dismissed Rameez Shahzad
and inform Muhmmad Usman to leave the hosts in tatters at 3 for 3. Glover
created more pressure on UAE getting wickets of D Silva and Zawar Farid to make
matter worst for the hosts. At the end of 6 overs, UAE were tottering at 14 for
5.
Waheed Ahmed and Mohammad Boota tried to steady the UAE
innings taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Glover struck twice
getting wickets of Ahmed and Boota in the same over. Ahmed and Boota added 35
runs for the 6th wicket. Ahmed Raza and Sultan Ahmed played some
lovely strokes which helped the host reach above 50. Both UAE batsmen added 34
runs for the 9th wicket. At the end of 20 overs, UAE scored just 80
for 9. Ahmed Raza was the top scorer for UAE with 22. Glover was outstanding with
the ball with figures of 4 for 12 in 4 overs, Van der Gugten and Meekeren took
2 wickets each, Klaassen 1 wicket.
Chasing down the paltry total of 81 runs to win, Netherlands
lost an early Max O’Dowd for 5 runs by a beauty from Rohan Mustafa. Ben Cooper
and Colin Ackermann played with caution taking the Dutch to 37 for 1.
After the power play over, Cooper and Ackermann continued their
steady approach without any pressure from UAE bowlers. Zahoor Khan got the 2nd
wicket for UAE dismissing Ackermann trying to uppercut the ball. Cooper and
Ackermann added 51 runs for the 2nd wicket. Ben Cooper and Ryan ten
Doeschate finished the job for Netherlands winning it easily by 8 wickets with
29 balls to spare.
Netherlands became the third team after Ireland and Papua
New Guinea to qualify for the World T20 2020 to be played in Australia.
Netherlands 81 for 2 in 15.1 overs (Ben Cooper 41*, Zahoor
Khan 1/12) beat UAE 80 for 9 in 20 overs ( Ahmed Raza 22, Waheed Ahmed 19,
Brendon Glover 4/19, Timm Van der Gugten 2/10) by 8 wickets.
For his brilliant spell of 4 for 19 in 4 overs, Brandon
Glover was named the man of the match. Oman will take on Namibia in the 2nd
match today.
