3rd test 3rd day England vs India: Five talking points

The Men in Blue are in a commanding position on the 3rd day at Mohali. Ravichandran Ashwin 72, Ravindra Jadeja 90 and Jayant Yadav 55 useful contributions to give the hosts a respectable 134 runs after being 204 for 6. The Indian team were finally bowled out for 417. The Indian bowlers did not allow England to score runs at ease. At the end of day 3 England have lost 4 big wickets with 78 runs on the board and is still trailing by 56 runs. Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets. Here we look at the five talking points of day 3.
1.       Partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav
The overnight Indian batsmen Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja started the day on a positive note adding 30 runs in the first half hour. Ashwin was dismissed by Ben Stokes for 72. Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav had other ideas with both the batsmen playing ball on merit. Ravindra Jadeja completed his half century off 104 balls. Jayant Yadav who playing his 2nd test match showed his credentials as batsmen. At lunch, India was 354 for 7. After the lunch break, both batsmen continued to frustrate the England bowlers. Both of them put on 80 runs for the 8th wicket before Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for 90.
2.       Ben Stokes the pick of bowlers for England
Ben Stokes was the pick of bowlers for England. In yesterday’s day play, Ben Stokes picked the wickets of Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli. On the 3rd day, Ben Stokes bowled with heart picking the wicket of Ravichandran Ashwin for 72. When other bowlers were struggling to pick lower batsmen of India, Ben Stokes showed his class again taking wickets of Jayant Yadav and Umesh Yadav to finish with figures of 5/73 in 26.2 overs. Ben Stokes has been in great form with the bat and ball so far in this series.
3.       Ravichandran Ashwin breaks the backbone of England batting
Ravichandran Ashwin was brought to the bowling crease by Virat Kohli in the 7th over. The number 1 ranked test bowler continued his brilliant form troubling England captain Alistar Cook. Ashwin dismissed Cook for the 2nd time in the match. He bowled consistent line and lengths not allowing the England batsmen to score runs at ease. Ashwin dismissed Moeen Ali with a beautiful delivery inviting the batsmen to hit a big stroke. In the last over of the day, Ashwin took the wicket of Ben Stokes to give the Indian team a big advantage. Ashwin has figures of 3/19 in 12 overs.
4.       Good support by other bowlers too
Apart from Ashwin, the other Indian bowlers have done a great job by not only restricting the England batsmen to score runs easily. Mohammad Shami bowled with great control troubling the England batsmen; Umesh Yadav was given only 1 over. Ravindra Jadeja did a brilliant job by bowling consistent line and lengths. The other wicket taker for India was Jayant Yadav who took the wicket of Jonny Bairstow. All the Indian bowlers showed discipline making the life tough for English batsmen.
5.       Joe Root still at the crease

Joe Root came to open the innings in place of Haseeb Hameed. He played with good technique against the fast bowlers. Despite struggling the Indian spinners, Joe Root is still at the crease on 36 not out. If England, are to be still in the match Joe Root needs to play match winning knock tomorrow to give the visitors a glimmer of hope to beat India. The other England batsmen struggled against Ashwin, Jadeja and Jayant Yadav.
