Four Nations Hockey Tournament: India beat Malaysia to finish 3rd
India beat Malaysia by 4-1 in the 3rd-4th
playoff match in the four nation hockey tournament played at Melbourne. It was
a dominating performance by the Indian team who outplayed Malaysia in all
departments.
In the first quarter, India scored the first goal by
Akashdeep Singh in the first few minutes to put the Malaysian team under
pressure. The Men in Blue dominated the Malaysian team and earned 4 back to
back penalty corners but could not convert chances into goals. At the end of
first quarter India led 1-0.
The second quarter was again dominated by the Indian team
who dominated Malaysia who played excellent hockey and never allowed the
Malaysian team a chance to score. At the end of 2nd quarter too
India still led 1-0.
In the third quarter, too India dominated the Malaysian
team. In the first five minutes none of the teams could score goals. In the
last minute of the third quarter India earned 2 successive penalty corners. VR
Ragunath scored the goal to give India a 2-0 lead. Before the end of 3rd
quarter Malaysian player Joel Van Heuzen scored the goal to reduce the gap to
1-2. At the end of 3rd quarter India led 2-1.
The fourth quarter saw India dominating the Malayisan team
again. In the 3rd minute of the last quarter Talwinder Singh scores
the goal to give India a commanding 3-1 lead. With 8 minutes to go Malaysia looked
dangerous to reduce the gap but the Indian defense was solid. In the last few
minutes India earned a penalty corner and Rupinder Pal Singh scored the goal to
give India 4-1 lead. Malaysia tried their best to score goals but India played excellent
hockey to win the match by 4-1.
India won their previous match against Malaysia by 4-2. With
this win India finishes 3rd. Men in Blue played good hockey but
could not take chances against Australia and New Zealand. But this experience will
help them to become a stronger team.
