China Open 2019: Sai Praneeth goes down fighting in the quarterfinals
The Indian challenge ended as Sai Praneeth went down fighting
to Anthony Gingting of Indonesia in the quarterfinals of the Super 1000 China
Open played at Changzhou on Friday.
It was a great start for Sai who started the 1st
game on an aggressive note-taking a 3-0 lead and continued to build on the
lead. At the interval, the Indian led 11-3. After the interval, Ginting reduced
the gap to 11-14 but Sai took 1st game at 21-16.
Ginting bounced back strongly in the 2nd game
taking a 9-4 lead. At the interval, the Indonesian took an 11-4 lead at the
interval. After the interval, it was a dominating performance by Ginting who
never gave chance to Sai and won 2nd set easily at 21-6.
The Indonesian had a perfect start to the deciding game as
he took a 6-2 lead. Sai Praneeth made a strong comeback with aggressive smashes
and drop shots to have 11-7 lead at the interval. After the interval, Ginting proved
his worth taking 6 points into the lead at 13-12. Sai committed a lot of mistakes in
3rd game and ran out of gas to lose the deciding set at 16-21.
It was a disappointing performance by the Indian shuttlers
at the China Open 2019. Saina Nehwal lost in the 1st round. Sindhu
suffered a shock loss to Pornpawee Chochuwong in the 2nd round. The
men’s doubles pair of RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty lost in the 2nd
round, the mixed doubles of Ashwini Ponnappa and RankiReddy lost in the 2nd the round also, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy too lost in 2nd round.
The next for the Indian shuttlers would be the Korean Open
starting from 23rd September. Sindhu would be looking to return her
best way while Saina would be looking to improve her performance.
