Rise of Jasprit Bumrah as a Test bowler for Team India
He made his first-class debut for Gujarat against Vidarbha
in October during the 2013-14 season. In that season, Bumrah took 38 wickets
from 8 matches and created havoc among opposition batsmen.
Before entering the Test arena, Bumrah made his T20I and ODI
debut during the 2016 tour of Australia. He was impressive with his pace and
accuracy.
It has been a remarkable journey for Jasprit Bumrah who has
created havoc among the opposition batsmen in Test matches. He made his Test
debut for Team India in the first Test match at Cape Town on the South African
tour played from 5th January 2018.
He picked only 1 wicket in South Africa’s first innings
giving away 73 runs in 19 overs. In the 2nd innings, Bumrah improved
his bowling by picking up 3 wickets for 39 runs and bought India back into the
match. Despite his performance, India lost the match by 72 runs. India was set
a modest total of 208 runs to win but was bowled out for 135.
Jasprit Bumrah performed brilliantly in the third Test match
played at Johannesburg from 24th January. He picked his first five-wicket haul in the first innings where he bowled a lethal spell and took 5 for
54 in 18.5 overs. His efforts helped India bowl out South Africa for 194. India
had scored 187 runs in the 1st innings.
Bumrah again was sensational in the 2nd innings
taking 2 for 57. Mohammed Shami was the pick of bowlers for India with figures
of 5 for 28. India won the match by 63 runs to lose Test series by 1-2. He took
a total of 14 wickets from 3 Test matches.
India then went to England for a 5 match Test series last
year. He missed the first two Test matches due to an injury that he sustained
during the T20I match against Ireland. In the 3rd Test match at
Trent Bridge from 18th August, Bumrah took 2 for 37 in 12.2 overs in
the first innings and helped England bowl out for 161.
In the second innings, Bumrah bowled long spells and took 5
for 85 in 29 overs. He bowled with great control with the new ball and the old
ball. It was an amazing display of bowling by Bumrah which helped India
register a 203-run win to bring back India into the game. He took a total of 14
wickets with great control.
Bumrah was the leading wicket-taker in the historic Test
series win on Australian soil. He took 21 wickets from 4 matches (8 innings)
with an economy of just 2.27 runs per over.
The Indian captain Virat Kohli relies on him to provide the
breakthroughs for the World number 1 ranked Test side India. Since his debut,
the Indian fast bowling unit comprising of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh
Yadav has created damage among the opponents.
The Indian Cricket Team took on West Indies in the 2 match
Test series. Bumrah performed brilliantly in the first Test at Antigua 1 for 55
in the first innings. In the 2nd innings, it was a sensational
bowling spell by Bumrah who took 5 for 7 in 8 overs to help Team India register
a resounding 318 runs win. He moved to number 7th with his superb
performance in the first Test.
He continued his brilliant form in the second Test at Sabina
Park, Jamaica. After scoring 416 runs in the 1st innings, Bumrah
created havoc to become the 3rd Indian to take a hat-trick in Test
matches. He took 6 for 27 in 12.1 overs. In the 2nd innings, Bumrah
took 1 for 31. India won the 2nd Test match easily by 257 runs.
Bumrah created a big impact for Team India in 2-0 series win
over West Indies. With his brilliant performance, Bumrah moved up to number 3rd.
He is India’s leading fast bowler in Test cricket. In the 12
matches he has played so far (24 innings), Bumrah has taken 62 wickets with 5
wicket haul five times.
With the Test series against South Africa at home coming up,
Bumrah has been ruled out of the series due to stress fracture. He is a key
member in the Indian squad for all three formats.
With the World T20 2020 to be held in Australia, Bumrah
fitness would be important. The Indian team management would like a fit Bumrah
raring to go.
