Dutch Open 2019: Lakshya Sen defeat Yusuke Onodera in three sets to win first BWF World tour title
It was an historic day for Indian badminton as Lakshya Sen
defeated Yusuke Onodera of Japan to win his first BWF World Tour title in the
finals of Dutch Open played at Almere, Netherlands on Sunday.
Lakshya Sen did not get off to a great start as his opponent
took a 9-3 lead. Despite Sen reducing the gap to 13-14, Onodera played with
aggressive intent and showed his class to win the first set at 21-15.
In the 2nd game, both players took alternate
points and were neck to neck till 12-11. Sen took 6 points in succession to
race towards 18-11 lead. The Indian continued never gave Yusuke Onodera a
chance to win the 2nd set at 21-14 to force the match into the
decider.
The third game saw Sen play with aggression right from word
go over Onodera. It was a dominating display by the Indian who showed his class
to dominate the Japanese opponent to win the third set at 21-15 and win his
first major BWF World title.
In the Dutch Open 2019, Sameer and Sourabh Verma were
knocked in earlier rounds. This will do a lot of good for the young Indian
shuttler who proved his worth on the world stage. His opponent Onodera who qualified
from the qualifiers defeated the top seed Sameer Verma in the quarterfinals.
Sen had won Belgian International last month. He has won
title at Junior level winning silver at the Youth Olympics, bronze at the World
Championship last year and is the Asian Junior Championship.
He showed great badminton skills in Dutch Open 2019.
In the
first two rounds, Sen won matches in two straight sets. Against Coelho, the Indian
had to fight hard before winning in three sets. It augurs well for Indian
badminton and let us hope this is the start something great for young Indian
shuttler who trains at Prakash Padukone Academy at Bangalore.
