ICC World T20 qualifiers 2021 Match 3: Curtis Campher brilliance takes Ireland to a comfortable win
Thanks to a brilliant spell by Curtis Campher, Ireland registered an emphatic win over the Netherlands in the opening match of Group A played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Monday.
Netherlands captain Peter Seelar won the toss and decided to
bat first. It was not an ideal start as Ben Cooper was run out in a mix-up as the umpire
checked if Paul Stirling took the bails off and the decision was retained as out. Ireland
bowlers kept tight lines not allowing Netherlands batters to score runs easily.
Bas de Leede and Max O Donald struggled against disciplined Ireland
bowling. In an attempt to increase the run rate, de Leede was bowled trying to
play an innovative stroke. At the end of the first six overs, Netherlands
posted just 25 for 2.
After the field restrictions, O Donald put some pressure on
Curtis Campher and Simi Singh with boundaries. Collin Ackerman did a decent job
keeping the scoreboard ticking. Campher came into his 2nd overproduced a magical over getting 4 wickets in succession. Ackerman was given
caught behind via review. The umpire gave it wide and on review, it was overturned
to out as it hit the gloves. Campher then got wickets of experienced Ryan
Doeschate and then grabbed Scott Edwards via review to become the first Ireland
bowler to pick up a hattrick in T20Is.
The experienced Roelf Van der Merwe also perished taking the
inside edge onto the stumps to leave Ireland in deep trouble at 51 for 6. O
Donald looked comfortable with his strokes keeping the Netherlands hopes alive and
reached fifty off 40 balls. He was finally dismissed by Adair in search of
quick runs. Seelar and O Donald added 37 runs for the 7th wicket. Ireland
ended the innings as Seelar and Glover were dismissed by Adair while Van Beek
was run out.
In reply to 107 runs to win, Kevin O Brien displayed
attacking cricket right from word go putting Seelar under pressure. Paul
Stirling looked at ease keeping Ireland under control. Kevin O Brien and Andy Balbirnie
could not contribute many runs being caught. At the end of the first six overs,
Ireland posted 38 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Gareth Delany kept the
pressure on Netherland’s bowlers hitting boundaries at will. On other hand, Stirling
did not do anything silly making life easy for Ireland. Before the winning
runs, Seelar dismissed Delany. Delany and Stirling added 59 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Curtis Campher hit the winning runs to help Ireland register
comfortable 7 wickets win.
Ireland 107 for 3 in 15.1 overs (Delany 44, Paul Stirling 30*,
Seelar 1/14) beat Netherlands 106 in 20 overs (Max O Donald 51, Pieter Seelar
21, Curtis Campher 4/26, Mark Adair 3/9) by 7 wickets.
For his 4 for 26 in 4 overs, Curtis Campher was named the
man of the match award.
