Indian women crush West Indies by 61 runs to whitewash the T20I series

It was another dominating display by the Indian women’s team as they crushed West Indies by 61 runs to whitewash the T20I series in the fifth and final T20I match played at Providence Stadium, Guyana on 21st November.

Indian stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana won the toss and decided to bat first. The decision did not pay off as both Shafali Verma and Mandhana went in successive deliveries adding 17 runs for the opening wicket. Jemimah Rodrigues and Veda Krishna Murthy steadied the Indian innings with attacking stroke play putting pressure on West Indies bowlers. Krishna Murthy reached her fifty off 43 balls while Rodrigues made the batting look easy on a tough pitch. In the last over, Rodrigues reached her fifty off 55 balls and was dismissed the next by Allyene. Veda Krishna Murthy and Rodrigues added 117 runs for the 3rd wicket.

For West Indies, Anisa Mohammed, Hayley Mathews and Alleyne took 1 wicket each. Veda Krishna Murthy remained not out on 57.

Chasing down the target of 135 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for the hosts as Natasha McLean was dismissed by Anuja Patil for 9. The Indian bowlers kept it tight and did not allow the West Indies batters to score runs easily. Apart from Kynoshna Knight 22 and Shemaine Campbell 19*, none of West Indies batters scored double digits.

Anuja Patil was superb with the ball taking 2/3 in 3 overs, Radha Yadav, Poonam Yadav, Harleen Deol and Pooja Vastrakar picked 1 wicket each. Indian women restricted West Indies to 73 for 7 in 20 overs. The Indian women’s won the match by a massive margin of 61 runs. In this match, Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma did not play.

Despite the top two players not playing, the Indian women’s team outplayed the West Indies team in all departments. Veda Krishna Murthy was named the player of the match for his 57*.
