Indian women’s team qualify directly for the 2021 World Cup
After the points shared between the canceled ODI
championship series between India and Pakistan, the Indian women’s team became the fourth team directly to qualify for the prestigious 2021 World Cup to be played
in New Zealand from 6th February to 7th March. Each team
will play other teams once and the top four teams will qualify for the
semi-finals.
The series between India and Pakistan was supposed to be
played between July and November 2019, but due to political tensions between these
two countries did not go ahead. It is a piece of great news for Indian Cricket fans as the
national women’s team who reached the finals of recently concluded T20 World Cup
played in Australia last month.
With both teams getting 3 points each, India made into the
top four with 23 points. The Indian women’s team started their journey in ICC
Women’s Championship with 0-3 loss to Australia at home in March 2018. In July
2018, India defeated Sri Lanka by 2-1 at their home den.
India registered a historic 2-1 series win over New Zealand
at their home den in January 2019. Under the captaincy of Mithali Raj, India
won the series against a strong England side at home in February 2019.
In November 2019, India came back strongly after losing the
first match against West Indies to win the series by 2-1 to gain points. With 3
points split between India and Pakistan, Mithali Raj led side got direct entry.
The Indian women’s team gain direct entry along with Australia,
South Africa, England. As the hosts, New Zealand qualified for the prestigious tournament.
This will serve a great boost as the Women in Blue performed brilliantly well
reaching the finals of 50 over World Cup for the 2nd time. They
defeated strong teams like England, New Zealand, West Indies, Pakistan.
Thanks to a sensational knock of 171 by Harmanpreet Kaur,
the Indian team defeated Australia to reach the finals. In the finals, India
played brilliantly but lost the match by 9 runs due to pressure.
