This Day That Year: England recorded the highest team total in men’s ODI
The England Cricket posted the highest team total during the
3rd ODI match against Australia played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham
on 19th June 2018.
Australian captain Tim Paine won the toss and decided to
field first. It was not an ideal decision as England openers Jason Roy and
Jonny Bairstow played with positive intent right from the word go. At the end
of 10 overs, the hosts raced to 79 for 0.
Bairstow and Roy continued their aggressive approach making
life tough for the Australian bowlers taking advantage of small boundaries.
Bairstow completed his fifty off 39 balls while the explosive Jason Roy showed
his class with power hitting. Roy also reached half-century off 41 balls. The
Australian bowlers looked clueless against the England openers. Finally, a run-out
got the wicket of Jason Roy for a superb 82 off 61 balls to end 159 runs stand laying
a strong foundation for a massive total.
Alex Hales came to the crease and continued England’s
momentum with positive stroke play. On the other hand, Bairstow created
pressure on the Australian spinners to complete his century off 69 balls. Hales
was simply superb with his timing and reached 50 off 38 balls. Both England
batsmen showed no remorse on Australian bowlers. Jhye Richardson dismissed
Bairstow for 139 off 92 balls with 16 fours and 5 sixes. Bairstow and Hales
added 151 runs for the 2nd wicket. Soon after, Jos Buttler was
dismissed cheaply for 11.
The England captain Eoin Morgan took the attack to
Australian bowlers and put them under severe pressure with his big-hitting. On
the other hand, Hales completed his century off 62 balls. Morgan reached fifty
off just 21 balls which did more damage to the Australian line-up. Jhye
dismissed Alex Hales for a superb 147 off 92 balls with 16 fours and 5 sixes.
Hales and Morgan added 124 runs for the 4th wicket. He then
dismissed Morgan off the very next ball. The Australian bowlers restricted with
some tight bowling in death overs but was it little too late. England posted a
massive total of 481 for 6.
In reply to 482 runs to win, Australia was bowled out for
239 in 37 overs. Travis Head was the top scorer with 51, Marcus Stoinis 44.
England won the match by a massive 242 runs margin.
England holds the record of the highest team total in men’s
ODI. It will be very tough to break this record.
England 481 for 6 in 50 overs ( Alex Hales 147, Jonny
Bairstow 139, Morgan 67, Jhye Richardson 3/92) beat Australia 239 in 37 overs (
Travis Head 51, Stoinis 44, Adil Rashid 4/47, Moeen Ali 3/28) by 242 runs.
