This Day That Year: Eoin Morgan brutal innings against Afghanistan in WC 2019
On 18th June 2019, Eoin Morgan provided the
entertainment as he plundered Afghanistan played at Old Trafford, Manchester.
England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to bat
first. James Vince and Jonny Bairstow provided a steady start for hosts. Dawlat
Zadran provided the breakthrough for Afghanistan dismissing Vince. The England
openers added 44 runs. At the end of 10 overs, England scored 46 for 1.
Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root put Afghanistan under pressure
with positive stroke play. Both batsmen kept on ticking scoreboard. Bairstow
completed his fifty off 61 balls while Joe Root reached his half-century off 54
balls. It was an amazing partnership between Bairstow and Root making the life
of Afghanistan tough. Gulbadin Naib broke the 120 runs stand to get rid of
Bairstow for 90.
Eoin Morgan came to the crease and smashed Rashid Khan to
all parts of the ground. It was an amazing power-hitting by England captain who
reached his fifty off just 36 balls. He then continued to put the Afghanistan
bowlers under immense pressure with big-hitting. Morgan took only 21 balls to
complete his century. On the other hand, Joe Root gave good support. The
England captain Morgan and Root added 189 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Naib dismissed Root for 88 and then got rid of Morgan for a superb 148 off 71
balls with 4 fours and 17 sixes. Moeen Ali provided the impetus with a
quickfire 31 off 9 balls helping England post a massive total of 397 for 6.
Chasing 398 runs to win, Noor Ali Zadran was dismissed
cheaply by Jofra Archer for 0. Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah played with intent
trying to put pressure on England bowlers. At the end of 10 overs, Afghanistan
scored 48 for 1.
Mark Wood dismissed Afghanistan captain Naib to end 48 runs
stand for the 2nd wicket. Hashmatullah Shahidi played with positive
intent and looked in good touch. Shah was dismissed by Mark Wood. Shah and
Shahidi added 52 runs for the 3rd wicket. Asghar Afghan put the
pressure back on England bowlers with big-hitting. Shahidi completed his fifty
off 68 balls. Adil Rashid dismissed Afghan to break 94 runs stand for the 4th
wicket. After that wicket, it was a tough ask for Afghanistan as England
registered a comprehensive 150 runs win.
Eoin Morgan also broke the record of most sixes in an ODI inning. It was a dominating performance by England who dominated Afghanistan
bowlers and won it easily.
For his 148 off 71 balls, Eoin Morgan was named the man of
the match. It was England's fourth win of the World Cup 2019.
England 397 for 6 in 50 overs ( Eoin Morgan 148, Bairstow
90, Root 88, Naib 3/65, Zadran 3/85) beat Afghanistan 247 for 8 in 50 overs (
Shahidi 76, Shah 44, Archer 3/52, Rashid 3/66) by 150 runs.
