This Day That Year: India beat mighty West Indies to lift the 1983 World Cup
Under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, the Indian Cricket Team
defeated the mighty West Indies side in the finals of 1983 Prudential Cup
played at Lords, London on 25th June.
West Indies captain Clive Llyod won the toss and decided to
field first. Andy Roberts provided the initial breakthrough for West Indies
dismissing Sunil Gavaskar for just 2. Kris Srikanth and Mohinder Amarnath
remained solid against the top-quality fast bowling of West Indies. Srikanth
took the attack with positive stroke play. Malcolm Marshall got the wicket of
Srikanth for 38 off 57 balls. Srikanth and Mohinder Amarnath added 57 runs for
the 2nd wicket.
Mohinder Amarnath and Yashpal Sharma put up 31 runs for the
3rd wicket. After the fall of Yashpal Sharma’s wicket, the Indian
team lost wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for just 183. The pitch
was helpful for the fast bowlers.
The Indian team started on a positive note as Balwinder
Singh Sandhu produced a beauty to dismiss Sir Gordon Greenidge. Sir Vivan
Richards played with positive intent putting pressure on the Indian bowlers.
Madan Lal got the big wicket of Haynes to break 45 runs stand for the 2nd
wicket. A superb running catch by Kapil Dev dismissed Richards which made India
believe to win.
The Indian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals
and put the West Indies batsmen under pressure at 76 for 6. Jeff Dujon and
Marshall steadied the innings playing with positive intent. Mohinder Amarnath
provided the breakthrough dismissing Dujon with a beauty. Dujon and Marshall
added 43 runs for the 7th wicket. The Indian bowlers were spot on
the mark with their lines and lengths.
Mohinder Amarnath got the final wicket of Michael Holding to
lead India for the first major World title.
For his all-round performance, Mohinder Amarnath was named
the man of the match. This historic win changed the landscape of Indian
Cricket.
India 183 in 54.4 overs (Kris Srikanth 38, Sandeep Patil 27,
Andy Roberts 3/32, Holding 2/26) beat West Indies 140 in 52 overs ( Vivan
Richards 33, Dujon 25, Mohinder Amarnath 3/12, Madan Lal 3/31) by 43 runs.
