This Day That Year: India cruise to a comfortable win over West Indies
The Indian Cricket Team showed their dominance as they
defeated West Indies comfortably in the 2019 World Cup game played at Old
Trafford, Manchester on 27th June.
Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was a steady start as Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul played with positive
intent. Kemar Roach provided the breakthrough for West Indies to dismiss Rohit
Sharma through a controversial DRS. The umpire gave it not out as Jason Holder
decided to review the decision and the decision was overturned. Virat Kohli and
Rahul played with caution as India scored 47 for 1 at end of 10 overs.
Kohli and Rahul kept the scoreboard ticking with positive
stroke play. Jason Holder produced a beauty to dismiss Rahul for 48. Both
batsmen added 69 runs for the 2nd wicket. Vijay Shankar and Kedar
Jadhav struggled with their timing as they were dismissed cheaply. On the other
hand, Kohli looked at ease as he completed his fifty off 55 balls.
Kemar Roach dismissed both Vijay Shankar and Kedar Jadhav in
quick succession to leave India at 140 for 4. MS Dhoni was given a reprieve as
Shai Hope missed an easy stumping. Holder got an important wicket to get rid of
Kohli for 72. Dhoni and Kohli added 40 runs for the 5th wicket.
Hardik Pandya came to the crease and showed his intent right
from the word go. On the other, MS Dhoni kept on the pressure of taking singles.
Pandya was dismissed for a quickfire 46 off 38 balls. He and Dhoni added 70 runs
for the 6th wicket. MS Dhoni smashed 16 runs in the last over from
Oshane Thomas bowling. In due course, he reached his fifty off 59 balls that
helped Team India post 268 for 7 in 50 overs.
Chasing 269 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for West
Indies as Chris Gayle and Shai Hope were dismissed in quick succession. The
Indian bowlers did not allow the West Indies batsmen to score runs easily. At
the end of 10 overs, West Indies was struggling at 29 for 2.
Sunil Ambris and Nicolas Pooran tried to put pressure on the
Indian bowlers but could not do it. Hardik Pandya dismissed Ambris ending a 55
runs stand for the 3rd wicket. Mohammed Shami, Bumrah, Chahal,
Kuldeep Yadav proved too much as they bowled out West Indies for a paltry total
of 143 giving India a massive 125 runs win.
For his captain's knock of 72, Kohli was awarded the man of
the match. This win helped India’s unbeaten run in 2019 WC.
