This Day That Year: India stun England in WWC 2017


The Indian Women’s Cricket Team stunned everybody as they defeated the hosts and one of the favorites England in the opening match of the ICC Women’s World 2017 played at County Ground, Derby on 24th June.

England captain Heather Knight won the toss and decided to field first. Smriti Mandhana looked positive right from the word go putting pressure on the England bowlers with her attacking stroke play. On the other hand, Poonam Raut took some time to settle. At the end of 10 overs, Indian openers scored 59 for 0.

The Indian openers kept on ticking the scoreboard with positive stroke play. Mandhana reached her fifty off just 45 balls which made life tough for England bowlers. On the other hand, Raut remained steady and gave support to Mandhana. The left-handed batter Mandhana took the attack to England bowlers.

Raut completed her fifty off 86 balls. In the same over, Mandhana was dismissed for a well made 90 off 100 balls. The Indian openers added 144 runs which laid a strong foundation to post a massive total. Mithali Raj was fluent in her stroke play by rotating the strike and hitting boundaries. Hazell dismissed Raut for a well made 86. Raut and Raj added 78 runs for the 2nd wicket. The Indian captain Mithali looked in decent touch to complete her fifty off 57 balls. Harmanpreet Kaur remained not out on 24 off 22 balls with the Indian captain Raj dismissed off the last ball. Raj and Kaur added 59 runs for the 3rd wicket to help India post 281 for 3 in 50 overs.

In reply to 282 runs to win, Tammy Beaumont and Sarah Taylor got off to a decent start with positive stroke play. Shikha Pandey provided the breakthrough for India dismissing Beaumont. The England openers added 33 runs. At the end of the first 10 overs, the hosts scored 40 for 1.

Pandey struck for the second time getting rid of the experienced Sarah Taylor. Soon after, Deepti Sharma dismissed Natalie Sciver to put England under pressure at 67 for 3. The England captain Heather Knight and Fran Wilson steadied the innings with aggressive strokes. Wilson played innovative stroke play which made life tough for Indian bowlers. The Indian fielding was not up to the mark with a lot of catch drops.

With England going strong, a brilliant run out by Harmanpreet Kaur ended the innings of Knight. Knight and Wilson added 67 runs for the 4th wicket. Deepti Sharma took a brilliant return catch to dismiss Danielle Wyatt to leave England in trouble at 154 for 5. Wilson looked composed reaching her first ODI fifty off 57 balls. Katherine Brunt and Wilson kept England hopes alive with positive stroke play.

A superb direct hit throw by Deepti Sharma dismissed Brunt. Brunt and Wilson added 62 runs for the 6th wicket. The Indian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals to bowl England for 247 in 47.3 overs. This was an amazing start for the Indian women’s team as nobody expected the Women in Blue to defeat the hosts England.

For his attacking 90 off 72 balls, Smriti Mandhana was named the player of the match.
Indian women 281 for 3 in 50 overs ( Smriti Mandhana 90, Raut 86, Raj 71, Heather Knight 2/41) beat England women 247 in 47.3 overs ( Fran Wilson 81, Heather Knight 46, Deepti Sharma 3/47, Shikha Pandey 2/37) by 35 runs.
