This Day That Year: India won record fourth Asia Cup
The Indian Cricket Team defeated Sri Lanka by a massive margin
in the finals of Asia Cup played at the Rangiri International Stadium, Dambulla
on 24th June 2010.
Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat
first. Gautam Gambhir and Dinesh Karthik got the team off to a steady start
putting pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers. A brilliant run-out by Upul Tharanga
and Kulasekara ended the innings for Gambhir. Gambhir and Karthik added 38 runs
for the opening wicket. Dinesh Karthik took created enough pressure on the Sri
Lankan bowlers along. Karthik reached his fifty off 51 balls.
Malinga produced the breakthrough for Sri Lanka getting rid
of Kohli for 28. Kohli and Dinesh Karthik added 62 runs for the 2nd
wicket. The Indian captain MS Dhoni played with positive intent to keep the
scoreboard ticking. Both added 46 runs
for the 3rd wicket as Karthik was dismissed for a well made 66.
Soon after MS Dhoni fell to leave India at 167 for 4. Suresh
Raina and Rohit Sharma put on a vital 50 runs for the 5th wicket. Rohit
41, Raina 29, Jadeja unbeaten 25 helped India post a competitive total of 268
for 6 in 50 overs.
It was an ideal start for the Indian team as Praveen Kumar
dismissed TM Dilshan in the very first over itself. Zaheer Khan got rid of
Tharanga cheaply to put Sri Lanka under pressure at 31 for 2. The Indian
bowlers kept on picking wickets at regular intervals and made life tough for
the hosts.
Kandamby and Kapugedra steadied the innings with a solid 53 runs
stand for the 6th wicket. A superb run-out by Kohli and Jadeja made
an important breakthrough to dismiss Kandamby.
Kapugedra looked impressive with his stroke play to reach
his fifty off 86 balls. On the other hand, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at
regular intervals and bowled out for 187 in 44.4 overs. India won the match by 81
runs.
For his 66 off 84 balls, Dinesh Karthik was awarded the man
of the match. The Asia Cup 2010 was played between India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh,
and Pakistan. India won matches against Bangladesh and Pakistan in the first
two matches. In the last league match, they lost to Sri Lanka.
India 268 for 6 in 50 overs ( Dinesh Karthik 66, Dhoni 38,
Malinga 2/57, Kandamby 2/37) beat Sri Lanka 187 in 44.4 overs ( Kapugedra 55*,
Kandamby 31, Ashish Nehra 4/40, Jadeja 2/29) by 81 runs.
