This Day That year: Mohammed Shami hat-trick against Afghanistan in WC 2019
The Indian Cricket Team survived a scare before beating Afghanistan
played at Rose Bowl, Southampton on 22nd June 2019.
Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was not an ideal start as Rohit Sharma was bowled by Mujeeb Ur Rahman
for just 1. Kohli came to the crease and looked in decent touch along with KL
Rahul. At the end of 10 overs, India scored 41 for 1.
Kohli and Rahul kept on ticking the scoreboard before Mohammad
Nabi dismissed KL Rahul for 30. Both batsmen added 57 runs for the 2nd
wicket. The Indian captain was busy at the crease taking singles and hitting occasional
boundaries. Coming at number 4, Vijay Shankar played with intent putting
pressure on Afghan bowlers. Kohli kept his composure and reached his fifty off
48 balls.
Rahmat Shah got the breakthrough for Afghanistan getting the
wicket of Vijay Shankar. Shankar and Kohli added 58 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Soon after, Nabi dismissed Virat Kohli to reduce India at 135 for 4. MS
Dhoni came to the crease and struggled for his timing along with Kedar Jadhav. To
hit a big shot, Dhoni was stumped by Rashid. Kedar and Dhoni added 57 runs for
the 5th wicket. With wickets falling at the other end, Kedar Jadhav
hit some important blows to complete his fifty off 66 balls to help India post
224 for 8 in 50 overs.
Chasing 225 runs to win, Hazaratullah Zazai and Gulbadin Naib
struggled against the Indian opening bowlers. Shami provided the breakthrough
for India to produce beauty to dismiss Zazai for 10. The Afghan openers added
20 runs. Rahmat Shah and Naib played with intent. At the end of 10 overs,
Afghanistan scored 37 for 1.
Naib and Shah kept the scoreboard ticking before Hardik
Pandya got the wicket of Naib. Naib and Shah added 44 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Hashmatullah Shahidi and Shah made batting look easy which created
pressure on the Indian bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah was bought into the attack and
got the breakthrough immediately getting Shah with a bouncer. Shah and Shahidi
added 42 runs for the 3rd wicket. Bumrah then dismissed well set
Shahidi to bring back India into the match.
Chahal got the big wicket of Asghar Afghan to reduce
Afghanistan at 130 for 5. Mohammed Nabi and Najibullah Zadran played with
positive intent putting pressure on the Indian bowlers. Pandya struck to get
rid of Zadran. Zadran and Nabi added 36 runs for the 6th wicket. Rashid
Khan looked in decent touch before being dismissed by Chahal. Mohammed Nabi kept the Afghanistan team in the hunt with some decent blows.
With 16 runs required off the final over, Mohammed Nabi
smashed the boundary to reach his fifty off 53 balls. Mohammed Shami got the
wickets of Nabi, Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman to pick up a hattrick as
India defeated Afghanistan by 11 runs.
Mohammed Shami became the second Indian after Chetan Sharma
to pick up a hattrick in World Cup history. For his 2 for 39 in 10 overs, Jasprit Bumrah
was named the man of the match.
India 224 for 8 in 50 overs (Virat Kohli 67, Kedar Jadhav
52*, Mohammad Nabi 2/33, Naib 2/51) beat Afghanistan 213 in 49.5 overs ( Mohammad
Nabi 52, Rahmat Shah 36, Mohammed Shami 4/40, Yuzvendra Chahal 2/36) by 11
runs.
