This Day That Year: Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut

On 23rd June 2007, Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut for India against Ireland. He did not get a chance to bat in the innings as India won the match easily by 9 wickets.
Rohit was a middle-order batsman and not able to convert performance into big scores. His life changed when Indian captain MS Dhoni promoted him to open the innings in the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Now, he is one of the best white-ball cricketers in the world. He has played so far 224 matches (217 innings) and scored 9115 runs with an average of 49.42. During his ODI career, Rohit has hit 29 centuries and 43 half-centuries which have helped India win many matches.

He holds the record of most 150 plus scores with 8. Apart from that he, the opener is the only batsman in ODI cricket to hit 3 double centuries, 2nd most 125 plus scores which show about his consistency. Rohit Sharma created an impact with timing, big-hitting and putting the pressure back on the bowlers with his stroke play.

Rohit Sharma was in sensational form during the 2019 World Cup as he kept on piling the runs. He was the leading run-scorer with 648 runs from 9 matches (9 innings) with a record-breaking 5 centuries and 1 century. Despite his consistency, India was knocked out in the Semi-finals by New Zealand at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Rohit showed tremendous consistency in 2019 across all formats. He was the leading runs scorer in ODIs with 1481 runs from 28 matches (27 innings) with 7 centuries and 6 half-centuries. His best score in the year was 159 against West Indies at Vizag. From 2013 onwards, the opener has the highest individual score.

In the year 2013, Rohit Sharma scored 209 runs against Australia at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. He followed with the highest induvial score of 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 2014.

He scored 150 against South Africa at Green Park, Kanpur in 2015. In 2016, he blasted away to 171 against Australia at WACA Perth.

In 2017, Rohit Sharma scored record-breaking 3rd double-century against Sri Lanka. He made 208*. He produced another brilliant knock of 162 against West Indies in 2018.

The explosive opener would be looking to maintain consistency and help India win more matches with his breath-taking knocks.
