This Day That Year: Smriti Mandhana scored brilliant century in ICC Women’s World Cup 2017
After stunning England in the opening match, the Indian
Cricket Team showed their domination as they crushed West Indies by a massive margin
in their 2nd match played at County Ground, Taunton on 29th
June 2017.
Indian captain Mithali Raj won the toss and decided to field
first. It was a disciplined bowling effort by the Indian bowlers who did not
allow the West Indies batters easily. The Indian spinners strangled them with
tight bowling in the middle overs by picking wickets at regular intervals which
made life tough for the West Indies batters.
Ekta Bisht finished with figures of 1 for 23 in 10 overs.
She made the breakthrough dismissing Felicia Walters. The right-arm off-spinner
Deepti Sharma took 2 for 27 in 10 overs. Deepti took wickets of dangerous Hayley
Mathews and Shanel Daley.
Poonam Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for India with 2
for 19 in 10 overs. She dismissed Deandra Dottin and wicketkeeper Merissa
Aguillera. Harmanpreet Kaur also took 2 for 42 in 7 overs by picking wickets
of Kyshona Knight and Chedan Nation. Jhulan Goswami and Shikha Pandey were
wicketless. The Indian bowlers restricted West Indies to a modest total of 183
for 8 in 50 overs.
Chasing 184 runs to win, Punam Raut was dismissed in the
very first over itself by Connell. Smriti Mandhana looked in superb touch
putting the pressure on West Indies bowlers. Deepti Sharma struggled with her
timing and was dismissed for 6. Sharma and Mandhana added 33 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
The stylish left-handed batter took the attack to West
Indies bowlers with positive stroke. On the other hand, Indian captain Mithali
Raj also timed the ball. Mandhana completed her fifty off 56 balls and made the
batting look easy.
Mandhana rotated the strike and hit the bad balls away for
boundaries. She and Mithali Raj kept the scoreboard ticking smoothly. The
Indian captain Raj was dismissed for a well made 46. Both batters added 108
runs for the 3rd wicket. Mandhana was nervous in her 90’s but Mona
Meshram gave her full support.
Mandhana was dropped on 94 by Knight. She controlled her
nerves and reached her 2nd ODI century off 105 balls. It was a
fitting end as the 20-year-old girl hit the winning runs to help Indian women
register a comfortable 7 wicket win with 15 balls to spare.
For her unbeaten 106 off 108 balls, Smriti Mandhana was named
the player of the match. It was her 2nd successive award after an attacking
90 off 72 balls in the first match against England.
Indian women 186 for 3 in 42.3 overs ( Mandhana 106*, Raj
46, Stephanie Taylor 1/24) beat West Indies women 183 for 8 in 50 overs ( Hayley
Mathews 43, Fletcher 36*, Poonam Yadav 2/19, Deepti Sharma 2/27) by 7 wickets.
