This Day That Year: Trent Boult became the first Kiwi bowler to pick a hat-trick in World Cup history
The left-arm fast bowler, Trent Boult achieved the feat
during the 2019 World Cup game against Australia in a day-night encounter
played at Lords, London on 29th June.
Boult troubled Australian openers Warner and Finch with his
swing. He provided the breakthrough for New Zealand dismissing Finch with a
beauty of a delivery. Kiwis put Aussies under pressure to leave them at 92 for
5. Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja rescued the innings with a 107 runs stand for
the sixth wicket.
Boult was trusted with the final over and got wickets of
Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Starc, and Jason Behrendorff to pick up a hattrick. He
finished with figures of 4 for 51 in 10 overs. Thanks to all-round bowling
effort, New Zealand restricted Australia to 243 for 9 in 50 overs.
Trent Boult became the first Kiwi bowler in World Cup
history to achieve the feat of picking a hattrick. Despite his efforts, New
Zealand was bowled out for 157 in 43.4 overs which gave Australia a comfortable
86 runs win.
Boult made his ODI debut for New Zealand against West Indies
at St Kitts on 11th 2012. Since his debut he has taken so far 164
wickets from 90 matches (90 innings) with career-best figures of 7/34. If the
conditions help the fast bowlers especially in New Zealand, he becomes a lethal
bowler to face.
During the 2015 World Cup played in Australia and New
Zealand, both Mitchell Starc and Trent Boult took 22 wickets each, but due to
higher economy, Boult finished as the 2nd leading wicket-taker in
the tournament.
In the 2019 World Cup, Boult continued his impressive
performance with 17 wickets from 10 matches (10 innings) with best figures of 4
for 30.
Boult also achieved the hattrick during the One-day international match against Pakistan played at Abu Dhabi on 7th
November 2018. He was at his best picking wickets of Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Mohammed Hafeez to rattle the Pakistani top order which New Zealand won the
match.
Shane Bond, Danny Morrison are the only 2 Kiwi bowlers to
pick-up a hattrick in One day international.
