England crush West Indies by 269 runs to win the series
The England Cricket Team produced a dominating display on
the fifth and final day of the 3rd Test match played at Old Trafford,
Manchester on Tuesday. By the virtue of this win, England earned 40 more points
in the ICC Test Championship points table.
Starting on the overnight score of 10 for 2, Shai Hope and
Kriagg Braithwaite started off confidently against England bowlers. They played
lovely shots to the boundaries before the rain arrived with the scoreboard reading
35 for 2.
After a short rain interval, Stuart Broad created history as
he became the 7th overall bowler in Test cricket to pick 500 wickets. He
dismissed Kraigg Braithwaite that kept low. Hope and Braithwaite added 39 runs
for the 3rd wicket. Hope looked steady with his stroke play along
with Brooks. Chris Woakes did the damage by dismissing Hope trying to hit a big
shot going into the hands of Stuart Broad. Woakes struck again to get rid of
Brooks leaving West Indies in tatters at 79 for 5. Chase and Blackwood remained
solid before the rain arrived again with the score at 84 for 5. The umpires called
early lunch.
The second session began with a little delay. England stuck
again as Dom Bess produced a one-handed pick up to run-out Roston Chase to
leave West Indies in big trouble at 87 for 6. Again, the rain arrived halting
England winning the Test series.
After the rain interval again, Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad
created havoc among the West Indies batting line up. On the first occasion,
Root decided to review the decision and it as it is. Holder was given out by
the umpire and now he reviewed the decision, it was upheld. Woakes dismissed the
West Indies captain Holder.
Dowrich who suffered an injury came to bat below Holder was
dismissed cheaply by Woakes for 8. Woakes got rid of Cornwall to put the
visitors on the brink of defeat. Broad picked his 10th wicket of the
match as he got rid of Blackwood helping England win the Test match by 269 runs
and the series 2-1.
Had West Indies batted 30 more minutes, the rain was pouring
down that would have saved the visitors. England produced dominating
performances after a shocking loss in the first Test match.
For his all-round effort, Stuart Broad was named the man of
the match.
England 369 in 111.5 overs ( Ollie
Pope 91, Buttler 67, Broad 62, Roach 4/72, Chase 2/36, Gabriel 2/77) and 226
for 2 in 58 overs ( Burns 90, Root 68*, Sibley 56, Holder 1/24) beat West
Indies 197 in 65 overs ( Jason Holder 46, Dowrich 37, Campbell 32, Broad 6/31)
