This Day That Year: Historic Test match played


It was a historic moment as England and India played the 2000 Test match played at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground between 21st -25th July 2011. Apart from this feat, both were playing their 100th test match between them.

Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the visitors as Zaheer Khan took wickets of Strauss and Alistair Cook. Khan limped off the field due to an injury and could not take in the match. England ended the rain-curtailed 1st day at 127 for 2.

A superb double century by Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell 45, Matt Prior 71 and Stuart Broad 24 helped England post a massive total of 474 for 8 declare. In this match, Dhoni decided to take off the gloves and bowled some overs. In reply, India ended the 2nd day at 17 for 0.

The third day saw Rahul Dravid showed some great fighting spirit with a superb 103 not out while Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and other players failed to contribute. Abhinav Mukund was the other top scorer with 49. India was bowled out for 286 and avoided the follow-on. At the end of day 3, England scored 5 for 0.

Despite the flurry of quick wickets, Matt Prior and Stuart Broad unbeaten partnership of 162 runs for the 7th wicket, England declared their innings on 269 for 6 to set India a massive target of 458 runs to win.

Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman took India to 80 for 1 at the end of day 4. The England bowlers chipped in with wickets at regular intervals. Suresh Raina played decently and was the top scorer with 78. It was not enough as England won the first Test match by a massive 196 runs margin.
The first-ever official Test match was played between England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG on 15th March 1877. To regain audience interest in the longest format, ICC decided to the first-ever day-night match with Pink ball on 27th November-1st December 2015 between Australia and New Zealand at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide.

As per 12th December 2019, there have been a total of 14 day-night Test matches played. Out of these test matches, 6 being played by Australia, 2 each by England, West Indies, Pakistan and 1 each by India and Bangladesh.  In the Australian summer, Afghanistan and India are slated to play day-night Test in Australia.

For his brilliant 202*, Kevin Pietersen was named the man of the match. It was a dominating performance by the England team outplaying the number 1 ranked Test side during that time.
England 474 for 8 in 131.4 overs ( Kevin Pietersen 202*, Matt Prior 71, Praveen Kumar 5/106) and 269 for 6 d in 71 overs ( Matt Prior 103*, Stuart Broad 74*, Ishant Sharma 4/59) beat India 286 in 95.5 overs ( Rahul Dravid 103*, Mukund 49, Stuart Broad 4/37, James Anderson 3/80) and 261 in 96.3 overs ( Suresh Raina 78, Laxman 56, Anderson 5/65) by 196 runs.
