CPL Match 8: Bowlers lead Guyana Amazon Warriors to an amazing win
Guyana Amazon Warriors defeated Jamaica Tallawahs in a low
scoring thriller played at Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Saturday.
Tallawahs captain Rovman Powell won the toss and decided to
field first. Amazon Warriors openers Brandon King and Chanderpaul Hemraj
started off briskly with positive stroke play putting pressure on the Tallawahs
bowlers. The Afghan sensation Mujeeb Ur Rahman got the breakthrough dismissing
King. Warriors openers added 56 runs in just 5.4 overs to lay a strong
foundation. Rahman struck again by getting rid of in-form Hetymer of the very
first ball. At the end of six overs, Amazon Warriors scored 57 for 2.
It was a superb come back from Tallawahs who kept on
chipping wickets at regular intervals and put the Warriors batsmen under
pressure. The experienced Ross Taylor struggled with his timing making 21 off
30 balls. Sandeep Lammichhane, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and other Tallawahs brilliance
bowled out Warriors for 118 in 19.1 overs.
Chasing 119 runs to win, Tallawahs got off to a shaky start Chadwick
Walton, Booner, and Glenn Phillips were dismissed in the first few overs.
Warriors captain Chris Green dismissed Walton and inform Phillips. Captain
Rovman Powell and Asif Ali were not able to score at a quick pace as Warriors
bowlers kept tight line and length. At the end of six overs, Tallawahs were in
deep trouble at 16 for 3.
The part-timer Chanderpaul Hemraj broke the partnership
dismissing Asif Ali. Ali and Powell added 30 runs for the 4th
wicket. Amazon Warriors kept on taking wickets at regular, also stem the flow
of runs.
Andre Russell just looked in cracking form hitting the ball
decently. On the other side, Fidel Edwards faced only 1 ball. With 22 runs
required off the final over, it was a steep ask as Russell hit a six off the
final ball to complete his fifty off 37 balls. Guyana Amazon Warriors won the
match by 14 runs to register their 2nd win of the tournament.
It was the lowest total defended in CPL history. Guyana
Amazon Warriors really held their nerves to overcome Andre Russell power-hitting.
Naveen-ul-Haq was awarded the man of the match for his
superb bowling.
Guyana Amazon Warriors 118 in 19.1 overs ( Brandon King 29,
Mujeeb Ur Rahman 3/18, Carlos Braithwaite 3/14) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 104 for
7 in 20 overs ( Andre Russell 52*, Powell 23, Chris Green 2/10, Nedd 1/10) by
14 runs.
