This Day That Year: PV Sindhu became World Champion
PV Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian to
win a World Champion in the 2019 edition played at Basel, Switzerland on 25th
August 2019.
It was a dominating performance by the Indian star who outplayed
Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in two straight sets. Right from the word go, Sindhu
never allowed her Japanese opponent and chance to win the World Champion by
21-7, 21-7. The Indian was too strong as she hit lovely smashes, drop shots,
and created enough pressure on the opposition.
In the first game, Sindhu began off to a great start taking
commanding 8-1 lead. At the interval, the Indian looked in great control with
11-2 lead. After the break, Sindhu’s domination over her opponent continued to
win the first set at 21-7.
The second game followed the same suit as Sindhu proved too
strong for Okuhara and created enough pressure with her smashes. At the
interval, the Indian had an 11-4 lead. After the interval, it was one-way
traffic as Sindhu looked in complete control to win the game at 21-7. By virtue
of this win, Sindhu became the first Indian shuttler to take gold at World
Championship history.
She was given a bye in the first round. PV Sindhu started
her tournament with a comfortable 21-14, 21-15 win over Pai-Y-P of Chinese
Taipei to move into the second round. She made light work of Zhang B W of United
States of America winning it easily at 21-14, 21-6 to qualify for the quarterfinals.
Sindhu showed great character and resolve to win against Tai
Zu-Ying of Chinese Taipei in three grueling sets. After losing the first set 12-21,
the Indian fought back with resolve winning the next two games at 23-21 and
21-19 in an entertaining contest. It was an amazing performance by Sindhu who
kept on fighting despite losing the first game badly. She moved into the
semi-finals and took on Chen Yufei.
Sindhu proved her worth in the semi-finals by dominating the
Chinese opponent winning it in straight games at 21-7, 21-14 to move into her 3rd
successive finals of World Championships.
After not performing accordingly in the finals, Sindhu
showed her class and created a mark by winning the World Championship. Apart
from Sindhu, Saina Nehwal won a silver medal in the 2015 edition played at
Jakarta and then a bronze medal at the 2017 edition at the Glasgow.
Prior to the gold medal, Sindhu won 2 bronze medals and 2
