IPL 2020 Match 2: Delhi Capitals register a thrilling win in Super Over
The second match of the IPL 2020 saw Delhi Capitals register
a thrilling win to beat Kings XI Punjab played at Dubai International Stadium,
Dubai on Sunday.
Kings XI Punjab newly appointed captain KL Rahul won the
toss and decided to field first. Sheldon Cottrell and Shami troubled Delhi
Capitals openers with their swing. The decision paid off as Shikhar Dhawan was
dropped by Rahul, but a miscommunication ended in the run-out of Dhawan. In the
same over, K Gowtham missed catching running backward. Shami bowled with
brilliant seam putting Delhi Capitals batsmen under pressure.
Prithvi Shaw played a reckless shot from Shami’s bowling
with a simple catch to Chris Jordan at mid-on. Shami took the 2nd wicket of the over getting rid of dangerous Shimron Hetymer giving an easy catch
to Mayank Agarwal to leave Delhi Capitals in trouble. It was a superb bowling
effort by Punjab bowlers to keep the pressure right from word go. At the end of
six overs, Delhi Capitals made just 23 for 3.
Rishabh Pant and Iyer put some pressure on K Gowtham. At the
end of the first strategic timeout taken by Delhi Capitals, the scoreboard read 45
for 3. Playing his first IPL match, Ravi Bishnoi looked impressive with his
line and length. After being hit for a boundary, Pant played a rash stroke
getting an inside edge onto the stumps. Pant and Iyer added 73 runs for the 4th
wicket. In the next over, Mohammed Shami struck as Iyer tried to hit a big shot
going into the hands of Chris Jordan at mid-off to leave Delhi Capitals in trouble.
Delhi Capitals took the 2nd strategic timeout with the score reading
93 for 5.
Sheldon Cottrell got rid of Axar Patel with a down leg
tickle to KL Rahul leaving the Capitals in more trouble. Marcus Stoinis stepped the
ante by hitting Sheldon Cottrell for 15 runs in the 19th over.
Ravichandran Ashwin tried to uppercut and was caught by Mohammed Shami at
third man. Stoinis showed his class by smashing half-century off just 20 balls
to give Delhi Capitals the momentum. He was run-out off a no-ball trying to
take the strike for a brilliant 53 off 21 balls. It was an amazing end as Delhi
Capitals posted 157 for 8 in 20 overs.
Chasing 158 runs to win, KL Rahul looked in decent with some
good shots against top-quality bowling. Mohit Sharma was bought into the attack
and got the breakthrough dismissing Rahul with an inside edge onto the stumps.
Ravichandran Ashwin struck twice by getting the wickets of Karun Nair trying to
sweep and giving away a simple catch to Prithvi Shaw. He then produced a good delivery
to get rid of Nicolas Pooran. At the end of six overs, Kings XI Punjab scored
35 for 3. Ravichandran Ashwin suffered an injury while trying to stop a single.
After the power play overs, Kagiso Rabada struck to dismiss Glenn
Maxwell trying to hit a big shot going into the hands of Iyer at mid-off. Kings XI
Punjab struggle continued as Sarfaraz Khan holed out to Shaw at long-on. Mayank
Agarwal who did not get much strike played some lovely shots along with Krishnappa
Gowtham. Kagiso Rabada bought into the attack got a much-needed wicket to dismiss
Gowtham. Gowtham and Mayank added 46 runs for the 6th wicket. With
that wicket, the final strategic timeout was taken by Kings XI Punjab.
With 60 runs required off the final five overs, Mayank
Agarwal took the charge and put Delhi Capitals bowlers under pressure. Agarwal
reached his fifty off 45 balls. With 25 runs needed from 2 overs, Agarwal made
the batting look easy hitting Rabada for 12 runs and ensured Kings XI Punjab require
13 runs in last over.
Mayank almost took Kings XI Punjab home as he 12 runs from the first 3 balls. Stoinis struck to get rid of well-set Agarwal and then got rid
of Chris Jordan with a simple catch to Rabada making it a Super Over.
Batting first, KL Rahul and Nicolas Pooran batted first.
Rabada produced a beauty bouncer to dismiss Rahul and then a brilliant yorker
to get rid of Pooran. Kings XI Punjab made just 2 runs.
Mohammed Shami bowled the Super Over to Pant and Iyer. Pant
did not face any problems as Delhi Capitals won the match easily with 4 balls
to spare.
For his all-round efforts, Marcus Stoinis was named the man
of the match award. The 3rd match will be played between Royal
Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai.

Rabada 2/28, Marcus Stoinis 2/29) and 2 for 2 in 0.3 overs ( KL Rahul 2, Rabada
2/2) in Super Over.
