IPL Match 10: Royal Challengers Bangalore register a thrilling win in Super Over

 

Royal Challengers Bangalore held their nerves to defeat Mumbai Indians in a thrilling match played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Monday.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to field first. Aaron Finch was dropped by Rohit Sharma. After that chance, he looked in great touch taking on Mumbai Indians opening bowlers right from the word go. On the other hand, Devdutt Paddikal made a slow start. Finch hit 3 boundaries off Rahul Chahar’s over to put enough pressure on the MI team. At the end of six overs, RCB openers made 59 for 0 and the first timeout was taken.

After the timeout, Finch completed his fifty off just 31 balls. Trent Boult got the breakthrough for Mumbai Indians dismissing Finch giving a simple catch to Pollard at long-off. RCB openers added 81 runs in 9 overs. Virat Kohli's struggle continued as he looked out of sorts. He was dismissed by Rahul Chahar giving an easy catch to Rohit Sharma at extra cover. After the wicket of Kohli, Paddikal smashed sixes off James Pattinson bowling and completed his 2nd IPL fifty off just 37 balls. At the end of the second timeout, RCB scored 136 for 2.

After the timeout, de Villers was severe on the Mumbai Indians bowlers. Devdutt's fine innings came to end as he tried to clear the boundary and was caught by Pollard at the boundary. Paddikal and de Villiers put on 62 runs for the 3rd wicket. De Villiers hit some massive sixes to reach his fifty off just 23 balls. Shivam Dube joined in the fun with a quickfire 27 off 10 balls with 3 sixes from James Pattinson over. De Villers and Dube put on unbeaten 47 runs for the 4th wicket to help RCB post 201 for 3 in 20 overs.

Chasing 202 runs to win, Rohit Sharma and de Kock scored 14 runs in the first over. Washington Sundar got the breakthrough dismissing dangerous Rohit trying to clear the deep midwicket boundary and gave a simple catch to Pawan Negi. In the next over, Isuru Udana got the big wicket of Surya Kumar Yadav that bounced big on to him and AB de Villers took an easy catch to leave Mumbai Indians in trouble. At the end of six overs, Mumbai Indians scored 35 for 2.

Chahal got the big wicket of Quinton de Kock with a simple catch to Pawan Negi at deep midwicket to leave Mumbai Indians in tatters at 39 for 3. Ishan Kishan looked in sublime touch and put the Royal Challengers Bangalore under pressure. At the end of the first timeout, Mumbai Indians scored 58 for 3.

Ishan Kishan just made the batting look easy and completed his fifty off just 39 balls. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya was caught by Negi at the boundary to make life tough for Mumbai Indians. At the end of the second timeout, Mumbai Indians scored 98 for 4. Kieron Pollard was dropped by Paddikal and then smashed 27 runs off Adam Zampa in the 17th over.

It was an amazing hitting by Pollard and Kishan who smacked 3 sixes off Chahal in the 18th over. During this course, Pollard completed his fifty off just 21 balls. Navdeep Saini bowled a great 19th over giving away just 12 runs.

With 19 runs required off 6 balls, Kishan hit 2 sixes off Udana to make the equation 5 off 2 balls. Udana then dismissed Kishan with a good catch by Paddikal at deep midwicket. Kishan and Pollard added 119 runs for the 5th wicket. Pollard hit a lovely boundary to help Mumbai Indians tie the match. Pollard remained not out on 60 off 24 balls and almost took MI to a famous win.

In the Super Over, Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya came to bat. Navdeep Saini was superb giving away just 7 runs and taking the wicket of Pollard. With 8 runs required to win, AB de Villers and Kohli came to open the innings. Ab de Villers was given out by the umpire and decided to review the decision, it was overturned not hitting the edge. Kohli hit winning runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

For his superb knock, AB de Villers was named the man of the match award. By the virtue of this win, RCB registered its 2nd win of IPL 2020.

Royal Challengers Bangalore 201 for 3 in 20 overs ( Ab de Villiers 55*, Paddikal 54, Boult 2/34) and 11 for 0 in 1 over ( AB de Villiers 6*, Kohli 5*) beat Mumbai Indians 201 for 5 in 20 overs ( Ishan Kishan 99, Kieron Pollard 60*, Udana 2/45) and 7 for 1 in 1 over ( Pollard 5, Navdeep Saini 1/7) in Super Over.
