IPL Match 5: Mumbai Indians register an emphatic win
Thanks to all-round performance, Mumbai Indians
registered an emphatic over Kolkata Knight Riders in the 5th match
of IPL 2020 played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on
Wednesday.
Kolkata Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik won the toss
and decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Shivam Mavi got the
breakthrough dismissing Quinton de Kock who tried to pull as Nikhil Naik took
the catch at midwicket. Surya Kumar Yadav got off to a quick start as he hit 4
boundaries off Sandeep Warrier 2nd over. Rohit Sharma looked in
great touch hitting Pat Cummins for big shots with his favorite pull shots.
Sunil Narine was bought into the attack but both batsmen looked in great touch.
At the end of the first six overs, Mumbai Indians scored 59 for 1.
Surya Kumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma put enough pressure on
Kolkata Knight Riders. Mumbai Indians took the first strategic timeout with the scoreboard reading 83 for 1. Both batsmen played Kuldeep Yadav well taking
singles and hitting boundaries. A superb throw by Narine and gather by Eoin
Morgan ended the innings for Surya Kumar Yadav. Surya Kumar and Rohit added 90
runs for the 2nd wicket.
Saurabh Tiwary came to the crease and timed the ball right
from word go. On the other hand, Rohit completed his fifty off 39 balls. Sunil
Narine was bought into the attack and dismissed Tiwary giving a simple catch to
Pat Cummins at long-off. Rohit and Tiwary added 49 runs for the 3rd
wicket. With that wicket, the second strategic timeout was taken.
After the break, Hardik Pandya smashed Pat Cummins to put
enough pressure on KKR bowlers. Shivam Mavi was impressive with his bowling
getting rid of well-set Rohit Sharma for 80. Hardik Pandya was unfortunately
hit wicket as Andre Russell bowled a yorker as bat came down knocking down the
bails. Shivam Mavi impressed with his bowling in the last over. At the end of
20 overs, Mumbai Indians posted 195 for 5.
Chasing 196 runs to win, it was not an ideal start as Sunil
Narine and Shubman Gill faced a maiden over from Trent Boult. Gill was dismissed by Boult trying to pull a
shot going into the hands of Kieron Pollard at midwicket. Sunil Narine survived
two run-out chances. James Pattinson bowled with accuracy and took Narine
wicket with a lovely one-handed catch by de Kock. At the end of six overs, KKR
scored 32 for 2.
Nitish Rana and Dinesh Karthik played some lovely shots but
were not able to score runs quickly. KKR took the strategic timeout at 64 for 2.
After the break, Rahul Chahar got the wicket of Karthik trying to sweep and was
found plumb in front. Karthik and Rana added 46 runs for the 3rd
wicket.
Soon after Nitish Rana also perished as Hardik Pandya took a
lovely catch at the boundary. Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell struggled to time
the ball. Jasprit Bumrah ended KKR hopes by getting rid of dangerous batsmen. Pat
Cummins enjoyed some fun moments as he smashed 4 sixes off Jasprit Bumrah’s
over. The target was too steep as Mumbai Indians restricted KKR to 146 for 9 in
20 overs. For Mumbai Indians, Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul Chahar, Pattinson, and Boult
took 2 wickets each.
For his captains knock scoring 80 off 54 balls with 3 fours
and 6 sixes, Rohit Sharma was awarded the man of the match.
Mumbai Indians 195 for 5 in 20 overs ( Rohit Sharma 80, Surya
Kumar Yadav 47, Shivam Mavi 2/32) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 146 for 9 in 20
overs ( Pat Cummins 33, Dinesh Karthik 30, Bumrah 2/32, Pattinson 2/30) by 49
runs.
