Devdutt Paddikal- the rising star of IPL 2020

Devdutt Paddikal had an amazing debut season for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2020. After consistent performances in the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year, RCB bought him last year. He did not get a chance to play in the XI and Virat Kohli's performance was not great as they finished last in the points table.

Paddikal grabbed his opportunities with both hands as he got to open the innings for RCB in this year’s IPL. In the opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on 21st September, the left-handed batsman showed his class and impressed with his stroke. He was dropped twice but remained calm to reach a half-century off 36 balls. It was an impressive beginning for Paddikal being dismissed for 56 off 42 balls with boundaries. He and Finch added 90 runs for the opening wicket. Despite his efforts, RCB posted 163 for 5 in 20 overs. Thanks to Chahal's brilliance, RCB registered 10 runs win.

Chasing down a massive target of 207 runs to win, against Kings XI Punjab, Paddikal failed to contribute anything as he was dismissed for just 1. In the 3rd match against Mumbai Indians, the left-handed batsman impressed with his stroke play and made batting look easy. He scored a brisk 54 off 40 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes. RCB openers put on 81 runs for the opening laying a strong foundation for a massive total. The match ended in a tie with RCB winning the match in Super Over.

Paddikal continued his impressive form in their fourth match against Rajasthan Royals. Chasing down 155 runs to win, Finch was dismissed cheaply but the left-handed bat attacked the RR bowlers. He played the pacers and spinners well reaching his fifty off 34 balls. His knock helped RCB inch closer to the win. He was dismissed for a superb 63 off 45 balls. RCB won the match easily by 8 wickets.

He was dismissed cheaply against Delhi Capitals chasing down a huge target of 197 runs. In the match against CSK, Paddikal struggled to time the ball and scored 33 off 34 balls. Paddikal made a quickfire 32 off 23 balls against KKR at Sharjah.

Paddikal got a start against KXIP at Sharjah but failed to convert into a big score. He scored 2 more scores of half-centuries once against Mumbai Indians and then against Delhi Capitals. RCB finished fourth in the points table.

In the eliminator against SRH, Paddikal was dismissed cheaply for 1 trying to hit a big shot giving a simple catch to Garg at midwicket. He ended the season with 473 runs from 14 matches (14 innings) that included 5 half-centuries. For his superb batting, Paddikal was named the emerging player of the season.

Paddikal was the top scorer for RCB in this year's IPL. He opened the innings with Finch in the initial stages and gave good starts. The Karnataka lad player needs to work on power-hitting and hope to see much more in 2021 season.
