IPL Match 55: Delhi Capitals beat RCB to finish 2nd
Delhi Capitals defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by six
wickets to finish the league stage in 2nd place played at Sheikh
Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Monday. Despite losing, Royal
Challengers Bangalore qualified for the playoffs stage.
DC captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to field
first. It was a cautious start by Joshua
Phillippe and Devdutt Paddikal who could not time the ball. Kagiso Rabada
provided the breakthrough for Capitals getting rid of Philippe whose bat
twisted and gave a simple catch to Prithvi Shaw.
Paddikal looked impressive with his stroke-making and put
some pressure on DC bowlers. On the other hand, Kohli took some time to settle.
At the end of the first six overs, RCB scored 40 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Kohli and Paddikal kept the
scoreboard ticking with tight bowling from DC. At the end of the first timeout,
RCB scored 56 for 1. Nortje dropped a tough chance to dismiss Kohli at long-on.
A decent catch by Stoinis at deep midwicket ended the innings for Kohli. Kohli
and Paddikal added 57 runs for the 2nd wicket. AB de Villiers looked
in decent touch taking singles putting pressure on DC bowlers. At the end of
the second timeout, RCB scored 103 for 2.
Paddikal reached 50 off 40 balls and tried to give some
momentum. Nortje struck for DC getting rid of well-set Paddikal. Paddikal and
de Villiers added 30 runs for the 3rd wicket. Nortje dismissed Chris
Morris in the same over to put RCB under pressure. Shivam Dube and AB de
Villiers hit some lusty blows. Rabada got rid of Shivam Dube with an easy catch
by Rahane at deep midwicket. Trying to steal the second run, de Villiers was
run out. At the end of the 20 overs, RCB scored 152 for 7.
Chasing 153 runs to win, Prithvi Shaw hit two lovely
boundaries while Dhawan hit back to form. Mohammed Siraj produced a beauty to
dismiss Shaw. Shikhar Dhawan and Rahane kept the scoreboard ticking with occasional
singles and hitting boundaries. At the end of the first six overs, DC scored 53
for 1. With that, the first timeout was taken.
Dhawan and Rahane kept the momentum going showing their
class. At the end of the first timeout, Delhi Capitals made batting look
impressive. Dhawan completed his fifty off 37 balls while Rahane did the job
perfectly. Shahbaz Ahmed got the breakthrough dismissing Dhawan trying to sweep
giving a simple catch to Dube at short fine leg. Dhawan and Rahane added 88 runs
for the 2nd wicket.
Rahane also provided stability to the innings reaching his fifty
off 37 balls. At the end of the second timeout, DC scored 128 for 2. Shahbaz struck
again to get rid of Iyer and then Washington Sundar dismissed Rahane.
Stoinis and Pant did the job perfectly for Delhi Capitals as
they won the match by six wickets with 1 over to spare.
Delhi Capitals and RCB made it into the playoffs. For his
figures of 3 for 33 in 4 overs, Nortje was named the man of the match.
Delhi Capitals 154 for 4 in 19 overs ( Rahane 60, Dhawan 54,
Shahbaz Ahmed 2/26) beat RCB 152 for 7 in 20 overs ( Paddikal 50, AB de
Villiers 35, Nortje 3/33, Rabada 2/30) by six wickets.
