New Zealand hammer West Indies to seal the series
The New Zealand Cricket Team proved too strong for West
Indies winning the second T20I by a massive margin played at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui
on Sunday.
West Indies captain Kieron Pollard won the toss and decided
to field first. It was steady by Kiwis openers Tim Seifert and Martin Guptill
playing with positive intent putting pressure on West Indies bowlers. Oshane
Thomas got the breakthrough for the visitors dismissing Seifert ending 49 runs
opening stand. At the end of the first six overs, New Zealand made 49 for 1.
Martin Guptill looked impressive with his stroke play but
was dismissed by Fabien Allen. Glenn Phillips and Conway made the batting look
easy on a good batting pitch. Phillips took the attack to West Indies to
complete his fifty off just 22 balls. With the scoreboard reading 140 for 2 in 13.2
overs, rain arrived. After the rain break, Conway and Phillips smashed the West
Indies bowlers all over the park.
Keemo Paul and Sheldon Cottrell had a bad outing as both
Kiwis batsmen never looked back. Conway playing his 2nd T20I reached
his 50 off 31 balls while Phillips completed a century off 46 balls. It was an
amazing batting display by both New Zealand batsmen adding 184 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Phillip's brilliant innings came to end for 108 off 51 balls. New
Zealand posted a massive total of 238 for 3.
Chasing a massive target of 239 runs to win, West Indies
began off well scoring 10 runs off the first over. Kyle Jamieson dismissed
Brandon King for 0. Phillips's brilliant run continued with a brilliant fielding
effort to get rid of Fletcher. Shimron Hetymer struggled for timing while Kyle
Mayers making his debut looked out of sorts. At the end of the first six overs,
West Indies made 44 for 2.
Neesham provided the breakthrough for New Zealand dismissing
Kyle Mayers. Mayers and Hetymer added 32 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Mitchell Santer dismissed Nicolas Pooran with a simple return catch to leave
West Indies in massive trouble at 72 for 4. Kieron Pollard hit some lusty blows
to give some hope for the visitors to win. The task for too big for the visitors
as New Zealand kept on picking wickets at regular intervals. New Zealand
restricted West Indies to 166 for 9 in 20 overs to give them a commanding 72
runs win.
With this win, New Zealand sealed the 3 matches T20I series
2-0. It was a dominating performance by the hosts who outplayed West Indies in
all departments.
For his 108 off 51 balls, Glenn Phillips was named the man
of the match award. The third and final match of the series will be played at the same ground tomorrow.
