Lanka Premier League Semi-finals 2: Jaffna Stallions cruise to the finals with a comfortable win

Thanks to a great effort, Jaffna Stallions defeated Dambulla Vikings in the 2nd semi-finals of the Lanka Premier League 2020 played at MRIECS Stadium, Hambantota on Monday.

Dambulla Vikings captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and decided to field first. Stallions openers Avishka Fernando and Johnson Charles started off briskly with positive intent from Fernando. Charles also took the attack and put the pressure back on Vikings' bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Stallions made 50 for 0.

After the field restrictions, Anwar Ali provided the much-needed breakthrough dismissing Avishka Fernando giving a simple catch to Perera. Stallions openers added 68 runs in 8.3 overs. Charles continued his superb form with attacking stroke play and kept on piling runs. Malinda Pushpkumara got rid of Asalanka. Asalanka and Charles added 43 runs for the 2nd wicket. Charles completed his fifty off 39 balls.

Vikings bowlers made a strong comeback by wickets at regular intervals. Stallions captain Thisara Perera failed to contribute any substantial runs while Charles was dismissed for a well made 76. Chaturanga da Silva, Hasaranga, Dhanajaya de Silva, and Suranga Lakmal got run out. Thanks to a superb knock by Charles, Stallions posted 165 for 9 in 20 overs.

Chasing 166 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Vikings as Samit Patel and Angelo Perera were dismissed cheaply. The left-handed opener Niroshan Dickwella played with intent putting pressure on the Stallions bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Vikings made 41 for 2.

After the field restrictions, Stallions bowlers choked the Vikings batsmen especially the experienced Upul Tharanga. Asalanka got rid of dangerous Dickwella ending 44 runs stand for the 3rd wicket. Vikings captain Shanka was dismissed run-out making life tough for Vikings batsmen tougher. Tharanga’s disappointing innings came to end ending the hopes.

Ramesh Mendis smashed 2 fours and 1 six off Oliver’s bowling before being caught out ending the hopes of the Vikings team. Chaturanga da Silva dismissed Kasun Rajitha to give Jaffna Stallions a win by 37 runs and qualify for the finals against Galle Gladiators.

Jaffna Stallions 165 for 9 in 20 overs (Charles 76, Fernando 39, Pushpkumara 2/24) beat Dambulla Vikings 128 in 19.1 overs (Tharanga 33, Hasaranga 3/15, Lakmal 1/24) by 37 runs.

Dambulla Vikings will take on Galle Gladiators in the finals of LPL season 1 on 16th December 2020. For his superb knock of 76 off 56 balls, Charles was named the man of the match award.
