Pakistan versus New Zealand 1st Test 1st Day: Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor leads Kiwis fightback

Despite Pakistan good bowling, it was a good batting display by Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor leading Kiwis charge on the first day of the first Test match played at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Saturday.

Pakistan's newly-appointed captain Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the visitors as Shaheen Shah Afridi got an early breakthrough getting rid of Tom Latham with a simple catch to Azhar Ali at third slips. Tom Blundell struggled against top-quality Pakistani bowling. Shaheen Shah struck for the second time dismissing Blundell to leave the hosts in trouble at 13 for 2.

The Pakistani bowlers troubled the experienced duo of Williamson and Taylor. It could have been ideal bowling for the visitors as Shan Masood dropped a tough chance to get rid of Williamson. Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Abbas, Yasir Shah, and Faheem Ashraf made the ball talk. At the end of the first session, New Zealand scored 55 for 2.

After the lunch break, the Pakistani bowlers continued their nagging lengths to trouble the experienced duo. Faheem Ashraf remained steady making life tough for the opposition. Despite the top-quality bowling by Pakistani bowlers, the experienced duo cashed on the bad bowling in the latter half as Yasir Shah bowled loose deliveries. Ross Taylor reached half-century off 127 balls while Kiwis captain Williamson completed his fifty off 150 balls to help Kiwis end the tea session at 128 for 2.

The third session saw good batting by the experienced duo. Shaheen Shah Afridi provided the breakthrough for Pakistan dismissing dangerous Ross Taylor with a beauty. Williamson and Taylor added 120 runs for the 3rd wicket. Henry Nicholls came to the crease and looked confident with his stroke play along with Williamson. Yasir Shah looked ordinary as he went for many runs while Naseem Shah bowled decently but was unlucky.

Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls took the advantage of some tired bowlers. Rizwan immediately gave the second new ball to Shaheen Shah Afridi. The things could have been better as Pakistan dropped Williamson for the second time as Haris Sohail dropped a simple chance. Henry Nicholls and Williamson have added 89 unbeaten runs for the 4th wicket. New Zealand ended the first day at 222 for 3.

New Zealand 222 for 3 in 87 overs (Williamson 94*, Taylor 70, Nicholls 42*, Shaheen Shah Afridi 3/55)
