Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 SF 1: Arun Karthick’s knock helps Tamil Nadu beat Rajasthan easily

Thanks to a great knock by Arun Karthick, Tamil Nadu cruised to a comfortable win over Rajasthan in the first semi-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 played at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad on Friday.

 

Rajasthan captain Ashok Menaria won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Bharat Sharma was brilliantly caught by Baba Aparajith by Sai Kishore bowling. Aditya Garhwal came to the crease and put the Tamil Nadu bowlers under pressure with his aggressive hitting. After being hit for a six, Baba Aparajith dismissed the dangerous Garhwal for a quickfire 29 off 21 balls. Garwhal and Menaria added 37 runs for the 2nd wicket. Ashok Menaria smashed Murgun Ashwin for 19 runs in the last over of powerplay to help Rajasthan post 56 for 2.

Tamil Nadu’s catching was not up to the mark as they dropped many simple catches. Ashok Menaria and Arjit Gupta played with intent putting pressure on TN bowlers. Menaria led from the front and completed his fifty off just 30 balls. Arun Karthik finally took the catch to dismiss Menaria. Menaria and Gupta added 93 runs for the 3rd wicket. From 120 for 2, Tamil Nadu made a strong comeback into the game by picking wickets at regular intervals with good support from the fielders. Rajasthan posted 154 for 9 in 20 overs.

Chasing 155 runs to win, Tanveer UL Haq got the breakthrough dismissing Hari Nishanth. A superb catch by Rajesh Bishnoi at first slips resulted in the big wicket of Baba Aparajith to leave Tamil Nadu in big trouble. Arun Karthick looked in decent touch right from word go along with Narayan Jagadeesan. At the end of the first six overs, Tamil Nadu made 35 for 2.

After the field restrictions, Karthick and Jagadeesan played kept the scoreboard ticking making life tough for Rajasthan. Ravi Bishnoi made an important breakthrough in his first over dismissing Narayan Jagadeesan as Mahipal Lomror took the catch at deep midwicket. Jagadeesan and Karthick added 52 runs for the 3rd wicket. Dinesh Karthik came to the crease and took the attack on Rajasthan bowlers putting them under immense pressure. Arun Karthick reached his fifty off 33 balls making sure that Tamil Nadu is on course for a victory.

Rajasthan's body language went down as they dropped thrice catches. Arun Karthick looked in sublime touch and hit the winning runs with a boundary. Karthick and Dinesh Karthik added unbeaten 89 runs for the 4th wicket. Tamil Nadu won the match easily by 7 wickets with 8 balls to spare.

Tamil Nadu 158 for 3 in 18.3 overs ( Arun Karthick 89*, Dinesh Karthik 26*, Tanveer UL Haq 1/22, Bishnoi 1/32) beat Rajasthan 154 for 9 in 20 overs ( Ashok Menaria 51, Arjit Gupta 45, M Mohammed 4/24, Sai Kishore 2/16) by 7 wickets.

For his unbeaten 89*, Arun Karthick was named the man of the match award. Tamil Nadu qualified for the second successive semi-finals of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

  The defending Champions India registered a commanding win in the 2 nd semi-finals against South Korea of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 played in Hulunbir, Inner Mongolia on 16 th September. Indian team began the first quarter on a good note with Abhishek's reverse flick shot saved by Korean goalkeeper Kim Jahean.   The defending Champions England qualified for the semi-finals with a thrashing of the USA in a must-win game played at Kensington Oval, Barbados on 23 rd June 2024.
