Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021: Sharukh Khan and Baba Aparajith partnership leads Tamil Nadu to a comfortable win

 

Thanks to a brilliant partnership between Sharukh Khan and Baba Aparajith, Tamil Nadu registered a comfortable win in the 2nd Quarterfinals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy played at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

Tamil Nadu captain Dinesh Karthik won the toss and decided to field first. Abhimanyu Rana started the innings well for Himachal Pradesh with attacking strokes while Prashant Chopra also showed some class. Sonu Yadav produced a beauty to dismiss Prashant Chopra as Himachal openers put on 24 runs. At the end of the first six overs, Himachal Pradesh scored 31 for 1.

After the field restrictions, a superb direct throw by Murgun Ashwin from the boundary ended the innings for Rana. Rana made a quickfire 28 off 26 balls. Nitin Sharma came to the crease and played with intent putting pressure on the Tamil Nadu bowlers. Sandeep Warrier struck for Tamil Nadu getting the wicket of Nitin Sharma. The experienced Rishi Dhawan looked in decent touch while Ravi Thakur showed some intent. After the fall of Ravi Thakur’s wicket, Tamil Nadu bowlers made a strong comeback by picking wickets at regular intervals. Rishi Dhawan took most of the strike in the end and smacked a boundary to help Himachal Pradesh post 135 for 9 in 20 overs.

In reply to 136 runs, Narayan Jagadeesan and Hari Nishanth began off to a quick start. Vaibhav Arora dismissed Jagadeesan to get the breakthrough. Hari Nishanth came down the track and was bowled by Arora. He then dismissed Arun Karthick hitting the inside edge onto the stumps to leave Tamil Nadu in trouble at 25 for 3. Himachal Pradesh bowlers kept decent lines and lengths. At the end of the first six overs, Tamil Nadu made 36 for 3.

With things looking bright for Tamil Nadu, Pankaj Jaiswal got the breakthrough getting the wicket of Sonu Yadav. Yadav and Aparajith added 35 runs for the 4th wicket. Mayank Dagar put Tamil Nadu on the backfoot dismissing the experienced Dinesh Karthik for just 2. Baba Aparajith and Sharkuh Khan smacked Vaibhav Arora for 4 boundaries in the 15th over to shift the momentum in favor of Tamil Nadu.

Sharukh Khan took the attack on Himachal Pradesh bowlers and made light work of the target with his power hitting. Baba Aparajith reached his fifty off 45 balls helping Tamil Nadu win the match by 5 wickets with 13 balls to spare. Khan and Aparajith put on unbeaten 75 runs for the 6th wicket.

Tamil Nadu 141 for 5 in 17.5 overs (Baba Aparajith 52*, Sharukh Khan 40*, Vaibhav Arora 3/30) beat Himachal Pradesh 135 for 9 in 20 overs (Rishi Dhawan 35*, Abhimanyu Rana 28, Sonu Yadav 3/14, Sandeep Warrier 2/32) by 5 wickets.

Tamil Nadu moved into the semi-finals and will face the winner of Rajasthan and Bihar on 29th January.
