Stats: Devon Conway became the fourth player to remain not out on 99 in T20Is
After a brilliant 99 not out in the first T20I against
Australia played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Monday, Devon Conway became
fourth player to achieve this remarkable feat.
Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to
field first. Conway came at the crease after the loss of Tim Seifert’s wicket
with the scoreboard reading at 11 for 2. The hosts lost another big wicket of Kane
Williamson making life tough for the hosts. Conway looked in sublime touch
putting pressure on the Australian bowling line-up.
Conway showed his class with aggressive hitting and took the
attack to the visitors bowling line-up reaching a half-century off 36 balls. After
the loss of Phillips wicket ending a 74 runs partnership for the 4th
wicket. James Neesham joined in the party and played with intent keeping the
momentum of the innings going. Conway upped the ante with innovative stroke
play in the last 3 overs putting on unbeaten 44 runs for the 6th wicket.
The left-handed could not take the second run off the last ball to remain not
out on 99 off 59 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes. His knock helped New Zealand
post a competitive total of 184 for 5 in 20 overs. Thanks to a superb bowling
effort, the hosts bowled out Australia for 131 giving them a commanding 53 runs
win.
For his brilliant knock of 99, Devon Conway was named the
man of the match award. Conway had a brilliant start to his T20I career. He
made his T20I debut for New Zealand on 27th November 2020 against
West Indies. Before today’s match, Conway had scores of 50, 69*, 91*, 93* in
the Super Smash for Wellington.
He played so far 5 T20Is matches at home with 273 runs.
Conway featured in 2 T20I matches against West Indies, 2 against Pakistan.
The other four players to remain not out 99 are Luke Wright
against Afghanistan in 2012. Dawid Malan achieved this feat against South
Africa at Cape Town on 1st December 2020. Mohammed Hafeez made a
remarkable 99 not out against New Zealand in the 2nd T20I match on
20th December 2020.
Alex Hales was the only batsman to be dismissed on 99
against West Indies played on 24th June 2012 at Trent Bridge,
Nottingham.
