India versus England 2nd ODI: Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes knock help England chase down to level the series
Thanks to a superb batting effort by Jonny Bairstow and Ben
Stokes, England chased down a massive target in the 2nd One-day international
played at MCA Stadium, Pune on Friday.
England stand-in captain Jos Buttler won the toss and
decided to field first. After 3 tight overs by Topley and Sam Curran, Topley got
rid of Shikhar Dhawan with a good catch by Ben Stokes at slips. Rohit Sharma
played some lovely boundaries putting the pressure back on the England bowlers.
The Indian captain Kohli looked in great touch hitting bad balls away for
boundaries. Rohit was unfortunate as he could not place the ball giving a
simple catch to Adil Rashid at short fine leg. At the end of the first 10
overs, India made 41 for a loss of 2 wickets.
After the field restrictions, Kohli and KL Rahul took some
time to settle by rotating the strike well keeping the scoreboard ticking. Moeen
Ali and Adil Rashid bowled tight lines not allowing them to score runs easily. Jos
Buttler dropped a simple chance to get rid of Kohli. The Indian captain reached
his fifty off 62 balls while KL Rahul looked composed reaching a half-century off
66 balls. As run of play, Rashid dismissed Kohli for the third time in the limited-overs series. Kohli and KL Rahul added 121 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Rishabh Pant came to the crease and took few balls to settle
before taking on the England bowlers. On the other hand, KL Rahul kept on
rotating the strike. Pant was given out for LBW and immediately reviewed it;
the decision was overturned as it hit the bat going for a boundary. The umpire
did not give any runs. The explosive Pant survived another chance due to DRS as
he was given out by the umpire for caught as it hit the elbow. Both Pant and KL
Rahul plundered the England bowlers with big shots. Pant completed his fifty
off just 28 balls while Rahul completed his 5th ODI century off 118
balls. Tom Curran dismissed KL Rahul giving an easy catch to Topley. Rahul and
Pant added 113 runs for the 4th wicket.
Hardik Pandya smashed 3 sixes off Sam Curran in the 46th
over to maintain the momentum for India. Pant was dismissed for a sensational
knock of 77 off 40 balls with 3 fours and 7 sixes. Pandya and Pant added 37
runs in quick time. Jos Buttler dropped a sitter to get rid of Hardik. Hardik
played a cameo scoring 35 off 16 balls. Thanks to superb batting effort, India
posted 336 for 6 in 50 overs.
Chasing 337 runs to win, Jason Roy looked in sublime touch
hitting boundaries at will putting the Indian bowlers under pressure. Jonny
Bairstow took some time to settle before launching an attack. At the end of the
first 10 overs, England made 59 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Roy and Bairstow continued their
aggressive intent making life tough for the hosts. Roy completed his fifty-off
just 48 balls to continue the momentum in favor of England. He made batting look easy and completed his
half-century off 45 balls.
A superb fielding effort by Rohit Sharma resulted in the
run-out of Jason Roy to break 110 runs opening stand. Ben Stokes came to the
crease putting pressure on the Indian bowlers including Kuldeep Yadav and
Krunal Pandya. Bairstow also joined and kept the scoreboard ticking hitting
boundaries. Stokes coming at number 3 reached his fifty off 40 balls. Stokes was given not out in a controversial manner that was given not out after the third umpire took some time.
Stokes upped the ante and made a mockery of the bowling line
up. It was an amazing batting effort by both Stokes and Bairstow. Bairstow
completed his 11th ODI century off 95 balls. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
struck for India getting rid of Stokes taking the gloves providing an easy
catch to Pant. Stokes and Bairstow added 175 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
Prasidh Krishna gave some hopes to the team as he dismissed
Jonny Bairstow giving a simple catch to Kohli and then produced a superb yorker
to get rid of Jos Buttler.
The Indian captain bought Kuldeep Yadav and Krunal Pandya
into the attack but Liam Livingstone and Dawid Malan kept on milking the
bowling. Livingstone smashed big shots to ease the pressure helping England chase
down 337 in 43.3 overs. Livingstone and Malan added unbeaten 50 runs for the 4th
wicket.
England 337 for 4 in 43.3 overs ( Jonny Bairstow 124, Stokes
99, Krishna 2/58, Kumar 1/53) beat India 336 for 6 in 50 overs ( KL Rahul 108,
Pant 77, Kohli 66, Topley 2/50, Curran 2/83) by 6 wickets.
For his superb 124 off 112 balls, Jonny Bairstow was named
the man of the match award. With this win, England leveled the 3 match ODI series
at 1-1. The third and decider will be played on the same ground on 28th
March.
Bairstow and Stokes lead England to victory in the 2nd ODI to level the series at 1-1.
