Indian women versus South Africa women 2nd T20I: Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee knocks seal the series in a thrilling encounter.

 

The match went right down to the wire as South African women beat Indian women in a thrilling 2nd T20I played at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium, Lucknow on Sunday.

South African captain Sunne Luus won the toss again and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the visitors as Ismail got rid of dangerous Smriti Mandhana providing an easy catch to Jafta. Shafali Verma looked in great touch hitting the bad balls away for boundaries along with Harleen Deol. At the end of the first six overs, Indian women made 41 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Doel smacked 3 boundaries off de Klerk over to maintain the momentum for the Indian team. Verma also played brilliantly rotating the strike and hitting big shots. Mlaba got rid of the dangerous Verma looked in great touch. Verma and Deol added 79 runs for the 2nd wicket. Soon after, Deol also perished trying to hit a big shot providing an easy catch to Ismail at long-on.

Richa Ghosh started her innings off with a boundary from Luus bowling. The youngster smacked 2 more boundaries to keep the momentum going for the Indian team. Jemimah Rodrigues gave good support hitting some lovely shots. de Klerk got rid of Rodrigues who tried to sweep providing an easy catch to Jafta. Rodrigues and Ghosh added 35 runs for the 4th wicket. Richa Ghosh provided the impetus for the Indian team hitting a quickfire 44 off 28 balls while Deepti Sharma made a vital contribution. Sharma and Ghosh added unbeaten 29 runs for the 5th wicket.

It was an ideal start for the Indian team as Rajeshwari Gakywad got rid of Bosch with a beauty of a delivery. Lizelle Lee continued her superb form in the series hitting boundaries and putting the Indian fielders under pressure. Richa Ghosh dropped an easy catch to get rid of Lee. At the end of the first six overs, South African women made 41 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Lee and Luus kept the momentum hitting boundaries and rotating the strike well. A superb direct throw by Deepti Sharma ended the innings for Luus. Luus and Lee added 58 runs for the 2nd wicket. Gakywad dropped an easy return catch to get rid of Wolvaardt. Lee reached her fifty off 34 balls. Lee was given another chance by Ghosh. Wolvaardt and Lee maintained the momentum for South African with lovely strokes and running between the wickets.

Radha Yadav took a good return catch to get rid of dangerous Lizelle Lee. Lee and Wolvaardt added 50 runs for the 3rd wicket. Wolvaardt hit some cracking boundaries to keep the pressure on the Indian bowlers. After surviving a stumping chance, Deol dismissed du Preez. Wolvaardt hit 2 boundaries in the last two balls to make it 9 from the last over.

Arundhati Reddy handled the pressure well by giving away 3 runs from the first four balls. Wolvaardt reached her fifty off 37 balls. With 1 run off 1 ball, Ghosh could not gather the ball as both batters took the run winning it by 6 wickets.

South African women 159 for 4 in 20 overs ( Lizelle Lee 70, Wolvaardt 53*, Gakywad 1/20) beat Indian women 158 for 4 in 20 overs ( Shafali Verma 47, Richa Ghosh 44*, Mlaba 1/27, Bosch 1/26) by 6 wickets.

For her unbeaten 53 off 39 balls, Laura Wolvaardt was awarded the player of the match. With this win, South African won the 3 matches T20I series by 2-0. The third and final T20I would be played on 23rd March.
