Indian women versus South African women 1st T20I: South African women crush India

 

The South African women continued their remarkable performance as they defeated India by 8 wickets in the 1st T20I match played at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium, Lucknow on Saturday.

South African captain Sune Luus won the toss and decided to field first. It was an ideal start for the visitors as Ismail got rid of stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana with a brilliant catch by Bosch. Shafali Verma started her innings with a six. Harleen Deol looked positive right from the word go and put the South African bowlers under pressure hitting 3 boundaries off de Klerk over. At the end of the first six overs, the Indian women’s team scored 41 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Verma and Deol rotated the strike decently. Mlaba got the big wicket of Shafali Verma who was stumped by the wicketkeeper. Verma and Deol added 45 runs for the 2nd wicket. The debutant Deol looked solid with her stroke play along with Rodrigues keeping the scoreboard ticking. Both batters made sure that Indian women were on course for a good total. Deol completed her maiden T20I fifty off 44 balls. Anne Bosch struck twice in the same over getting rid of Harleen Deol and Jemimah Rodrigues to keep a check on the Indian team. Deol and Rodrigues added 60 runs for the 3rd wicket. The South African bowlers made a strong comeback by picking wickets and controlling the run flow. At the end of the 20 overs, Indian women made a modest total of 130 for 6.

Chasing 131 runs to win, Lizelle Lee was dropped by Deepti Sharma in the very first over. Arundathi Reddy struck to get rid of Lee as Simran Bahadur took an easy catch. South African captain Luus and Bosch looked in sublime touch hitting boundaries and keeping the scoreboard ticking. At the end of the first six overs, South African women made 36 for 1.

It was a superb display of batting by Luus and Bosch who made life tough for the Indian bowlers. Despite some tight overs, both batters looked in great control of the run-chase. Indian fielding was not up to the mark as Gakywad dropped a simple chance. Deol struck to get rid of Luus with a simple return catch to the bowler. Luus and Bosch added 90 runs for the 2nd wicket. Bosch completed her maiden T20I fifty off 39 balls. The Indian fielding was not up to the mark they conceded boundaries at crucial times. Bosch hit the winning runs and helped the South African team register an 8 wicket win with 5 balls to spare.

South African women 133 for 2 in 19.1 overs ( Bosch 66*, Luus 43, Reddy 1/20) beat Indian women 130 for 6 in 20 overs ( Deol 52, Rodrigues 30, Ismail 3/14) by 8 wickets.

For her unbeaten 66, Bosch was awarded the player of the match. South African women take a 1-0 lead in the 3 matches T20I series.  The second T20I will be played tomorrow.
