Orleans Masters 2021: Indian shuttlers performance in the semi-finals

 

It was a disappointing day for the Indian shuttlers as only one out of the 4 shuttlers made it into the finals of the Super 100 Orleans Masters played in Paris, France on Saturday.

India’s challenge in the women’s singles ended as Saina Nehwal lost to lower-ranked Danish player Line Christophen of Denmark. It was a disappointing performance by the Indian who looked out of sorts.

In the opening game, both players fought for each point till 9-9. The Danish took 2 points in succession to take an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, Line played with aggressive intent putting pressure on the Indian winning the first game by 21-17.

The second game saw Saina Nehwal made a strong comeback to put the Danish player under pressure with smashes taking an 11-7 lead. After the break, the Indian looked in a commanding position before Line took points in succession to take level scores at 13-13. Despite, Saina making efforts, the Danish won the second game by 21-17.

The women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost to the number 1 seeded Thailand pair of Kititharakul and Prajongjai in two straight games. It was an even contest as both pairs took alternate points before the Thai pair took an 11-9 lead at the interval. After the break, the Indian pair equaled the scores at 13-13, but the top-seeded Thai pair showed their class winning it easily at 21-18. The second game was a dominating affair as the experienced Thailand pair won it by 21-9 to move into the finals.

Indian newly formed pair of Krishna Prasad and Vishnu Vardhan defeated Callum Hemming and Steven Stallwood in two straight games. It was a good start by the English pair who took an early 11-8 lead at the interval. After the break, the Indian pair made a strong comeback to level the scores and then points in succession to win the first game at 21-17.

The second game was a closely fought affair as both pairs fought for each point before Krishna and Steven won it easily at 21-17 to move into the finals. They will take on Ben Lane and Vandy of England.

Mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Dhruv Kapila went down fighting to Denmark pair of Niclas Nohr and Amalie Mageund of Denmark in three games by 9-21, 23-21, 7-21.
