Bangladesh versus Sri Lanka 1st ODI: Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka despite Hasaranga brilliance
Bangladesh produced a good bowling performance to defeat Sri
Lanka in the first One-day international played at the Sher-E- Bangla Stadium, Mirpur
on Sunday.
Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal won the toss and decided to
bat first. It was a historic moment as Tamim Iqbal became the first Bangladeshi
batsmen to reach 14,000 international runs. Liton Das went without scoring as
he was dismissed providing an easy catch to Dhananjaya. The Sri Lankan bowlers
did not allow the experienced duo of Tamim and Shakib AL Hasan to score runs
easily by bowling tight lines and lengths. At the end of the first 10 overs,
Bangladesh made 40 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Danushka Gunathilka provided
the breakthrough in getting rid of Shakib. Shakib and Tamim added 38 runs for the
2nd wicket. Hasaranga was bought into the attack and trouble both
Bangladeshi experienced batsmen in the form of Rahim and Tamim. Tamim showed
some intent playing aggressive strokes against Sandakan reaching his fifty off
just 66 balls. Dhananjaya de Silva struck in successive deliveries getting
wickets of well-set Tamim and Mohammad Mithun. Both Tamim and Mithun were given
out by the umpire but decided to review the decision, it remained out. Tamim
and Rahim added 56 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Mahmudullah came to the crease and put some pressure on the
Sri Lankan bowlers along with Rahim. Rahim showed his intent by completing his
fifty off 52 balls. Mahmudullah and Rahim kept on ticking the scoreboard by
taking singles and hitting boundaries. A superb catch by Udana ended the
innings for Rahim. Rahim and Mahmudullah added 109 runs for the 5th
wicket.
Afif Hossain struggled initially with his timing while
Mahmudullah looked impressive reaching his fifty off 69 balls. Dhananjaya
provided an important breakthrough in getting the wicket of Mahmudullah. Afif
Hossain and Saifuddin hit some valuable runs putting on unbeaten 27 runs for
the 7th wicket to help Bangladesh post 257 for 6 in 50 overs.
Chasing 258 runs to win, it was an aggressive start by
Danushka Gunathilka put Taskin Ahmed under immense pressure with a flurry of
boundaries. Mehidy Hasan Miraz provided the much-needed breakthrough getting
rid of Danushka Gunathilka with a simple return catch. On the other hand, Kusal
Perera struggled to time the ball. The Sri Lankan openers added 30 runs laying
a strong foundation.
Passum Nissanka looked impressive with solid defense and
timing the ball. Mustafizur Rahman struck in his first over getting rid of
Nissanka to leave Lanka under some trouble. At the end of the first 10 overs,
Sri Lanka made 49 for 2.
The Bangladeshi bowlers kept tight lines and lengths against
Kusal Mendis and Perera. Shakib AL Hasan deceived Kusal Mendis making an important
breakthrough for Bangladesh. Mendis and Perera added 41 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Mehidy Hasan struck twice getting wickets of Dhananjaya de Silva and
Bandara to leave Sri Lanka in massive trouble at 102 for 6. Hasaranga came to
the crease and put the Bangladeshi bowlers under immense pressure with aggressive
stroke play. Dasun Shanaka gave Hasaranga good support hitting boundaries and
keeping the scoreboard ticking. After the drinks break, Saifuddin produced a
beauty to dismiss Shanaka. Shanaka and Hasaranga added 47 runs for the 7th
wicket.
Hasaranga continued his aggressive approach and reached his
fifty off just 31 balls to keep Sri Lanka’s hopes alive. Musftizur Rahman went
off the fielder due to an injury. Hasaranga was not able to time the ball as he
was tiring. Isuru Udana also played a vital role with some lovely boundaries.
Saifuddin struck for Bangladesh getting the wicket of Hasaranga. Hasaranga and
Udana added 62 runs for the 8th wicket.
Returning from an injury, Rahman dismissed Udana who tried
to hit a big shot providing an easy catch to Miraz.
Rahman dismissed Chameera to bowl out Sri Lanka for 224 in
48.1 overs. Bangladesh registered a 34 runs win thanks to good batting effort
by Rahim, Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal, the hosts put up a respectable total
after being reduced to 99 for 4. With this win, Bangladesh earned 10 more
points in the ICC Super League.
Bangladesh 257 for 6 in 50 overs (Mushfiqur Rahim 84, Mahmudullah
54, Dhananjaya de Silva 3/45) beat Sri Lanka 224 in 48.1 overs (Hasaranga 74,
Kusal Perera 30, Mehidy Hasan 4/30, Rahman 3/34) by 33 runs.
Bangladesh takes a 1-0 lead in the 3 match ODI series. For
his brilliant 84 off 88 balls, Rahim was named the man of the match award. The
second match would be played on the same ground on 25th May.
