Australia posted lowest ever T20I total
They achieved this disastrous feat of lowest ever total in the shortest during the fifth T20I match against Bangladesh played at the Sher E Bangla Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka on Monday.
Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah won the toss and decided to
bat first. Mahedi Hasan and Mohammad Naim provided a flying start putting
pressure on the Aussies bowling. Ashton Turner got the breakthrough getting rid
of Mahedi Hasan. The Bangladeshi openers put on 42 runs in just 4.3 overs to
lay a strong foundation.
The Australian bowlers kept a lid on the Bangladeshi batsmen
taking wickets at regular intervals. Shakib AL Hasan, Mahmudullah, Soumya
Sarkar got starts but was not able to convert into big scores. A disciplined bowling
effort by Australia restricted Bangladesh for a modest total of 122 for 8. Mohammad
Naim scored run a ball 23 and kept Bangladesh going in the first six overs. Nathan
Ellis and Daniel Christian took 2 wickets each while Turner, Agar, and Adam
Zampa grabbed 1 wicket each while one was run out.
Nasum Ahmed struck off his first ball getting rid of Daniel Christian.
Australian stand-in captain Matthew Wade looked impressive with his stroke play
keeping the pressure on Bangladesh bowlers. The Australian batsmen struggled
big-time against the spinners of Bangladesh. Shakib AL Hasan dismissed the
dangerous Matthew Wade. Ben McDermott, Alex Carey, Moises Henriques, Ashton Turner
did not contribute any runs. Australia fell like nine pins to be bowled out for
62 in 13.4 overs. This is the shortest innings that the Kangaroos played in the
shortest format.
Matthew Wade was the top scorer with 22 off 22 balls. Shakib
AL Hasan rattled the Australian batsmen with his variations grabbing 4 for 9 in
3.4 overs while Saifuddin took 3 for 12, Nasum Ahmed 2 for 8. It was a disappointing performance by the Australian team as they lost the 5 match T20I
series by 1-4.
Australia played a total of 144 T20Is matches since their debut
with 72 wins, 67 losses, 2 tied, and 3 no-result with a win percentage of 51.77.
The previous lowest total for Australia in T20Is was 79 against England in 2005.
The Australian Cricket Team is looking ordinary in T20I
format. They were outplayed by the defending Champions West Indies 1-4 and then
crushed by Bangladesh 1-4. They would be looking to improve their performance
in the shortest format as the likes of David Warner, Pat Cummins, Smith will be
making a comeback for World T20 to be played in October.
