Bangladesh recorded their first ever T20I series win over New Zealand
Bangladesh Tigers created another history as they registered their first-ever T20I series win over Blackcaps defeating them in the 4th match played at Sher E Bangla Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka on Wednesday.
New Zealand stand-in captain Tom Latham won the toss and
decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the visitors as Ravindra
was brilliantly caught by Mohammad Saifuddin off Nasum Ahmed in the very first
over. Finn Allen put some pressure on Shakib AL Hasan and Ahmed with attacking strokes
before playing another reverse sweep being caught by Saifuddin to leave Kiwis
in some trouble.
Will Young struggled as Nasum Ahmed created enough pressure
on the Kiwis batting lineup. At the end of the first six overs, New Zealand
scored 22 for 2. Bangladesh took 2 reviews that went in vain. Young showed intent in keeping the scoreboard ticking while Latham rotated the strike. Mahedi Hasan
produced a peach to dismiss Latham stumped by Nurul Hasan. Young and Hasan
added 35 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Nasum Ahmed broke the backbone of the New Zealand batting
line-up taking wickets of Henry Nicholls and Colin de Grandhomme off successive
deliveries. Apart from Will Young who played according to the situation, other
Kiwis batting struggled. Mustafizur Rahman showed his class picking wickets of Tom
Blundell, Cole McConhie with a brilliant one-handed return catch. He then
dismissed well-set Will Young and got rid of Tickner helping to bowl Kiwis for
a paltry total of 93.
Chasing a modest total of 94 runs, it was not an ideal start
for the hosts as Finn Allen took a stunning catch to dismiss Liton Das cheaply.
The experienced Shakib AL Hasan and Naim played with intent hitting some lovely
boundaries. Ajaz Patel dismissed Shakib and Rahim in the same over to give
Kiwis some hopes. At the end of the first six overs, Bangladesh scored 32 for
3.
After the field restrictions, Mahmudullah and Naim showed
some resistance against the disciplined Kiwis bowling line especially the spinners.
Trying to take 2nd run, Naim was brilliantly run out by Doug Bracewell
and Latham gathered the throw. Naim and Mahmudullah added 35 runs for the 4th
wicket.
Mahmudullah kept his calm and smashed a big six off Tickner’s
bowling in the 19th over to make the situation easier for
Bangladesh. Mahmudullah and Afif did the job for Bangladesh helping them register
six wickets win with 5 balls to spare.
Bangladesh 96 for 4 in 19.1 overs (Mahmudullah 43*, Ajaz
Patel 2/9) beat New Zealand 93 in 19.3 overs ( Will Young 46, Nasum Ahmed 4/10,
Musfiztur Rahman 4/12) by 6 wickets.
Bangladesh performed brilliantly in the 9 matches so far.
They outplayed Australia winning the series 4-1 and dismantled with spinners
against New Zealand. For his 4 for 10 in 4 overs, Nasum Ahmed was awarded the
man of the match.
