Denmark Open 2021: Two Indian shuttlers qualify for the quarterfinals
It was a mixed bag day for the Indian shuttlers as PV Sindhu and Sameer Verma made it into the quarterfinals stage at Super 1000 Denmark Open played at Odense Park, Denmark on Thursday.
In the men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth gave a tough fight to
World number 1 Kento Momota losing in two straight games. The first game saw
the Indian playing attacking strokes and putting the Japanese under pressure.
Both players fought for each point but, Momota held his nerves to win the first
game. The second game was a one-sided affair as the World number 1 looked in
great touch and did not allow Indian a chance to win it easily at 21-9.
Lakshya Sen found it tough against Olympic Champion Victor Axselen
in two straight games. Sen was not able to create pressure on the tall Danish
player and lost it by 15-21, 7-21 to be knocked out.
Sameer Verma stunned the 3rd seeded Denmark
player Anders Antonsen in a dominating display. Verma showed great skills and
won the first game at 21-14. The second game was much close fought one with
both players fighting for each point, but Indian held his nerves to win it by
21-18. He will now face Tommy Suigarto of Indonesia.
PV Sindhu moved into the quarterfinals with three sets win
over Busan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand. Sindhu started the first game in a
dominating fashion and did not allow the Thai player a chance to win it easily
at 21-16. In the second game, Busan made a strong comeback putting the Indian
under pressure with smashes winning it by 21-12 to force the match into the decider.
The third game saw the Indian dominating with smashes and
drop shots. At the mid-game interval, Sindhu had a commanding lead. Despite the
Thai showing fight, the World Champion worked hard and won it by 21-15 to move
into the quarterfinals. She will face An S-Y of South Korea.
Young Indian pairing of Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun gave a
tough fight to Indonesian pair of F Alfain and Aridanto in three games. The
Indonesian pair showed domination in the first game-winning it easily by 21-15.
Dhruv and Arjun fought back strongly winning second set one at 21-17. It was a
disappointing performance by the Indian in the third game as they could not
control the errors and lost it 12-21.
SatwikSairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty did not cross the
line as they lost to Goh SF and Izzuddin of Malaysia in three games. The Indian
won the first game easily at 21-14 with great attacking play by both Indian
players. It was a strong comeback by the Malaysian pair to win the next two games
by 21-15, 21-15 to knock out the Indian pair.
