French Open 2021: Three Indian shuttlers qualify for the quarterfinals
It was a good day as 3 Indian shuttlers performed well at the Super 750 French Open tournament played in Paris, France on Thursday.
In the men’s singles, Lakshya Sen defeated Loh KY of
Singapore in two straight games. It was a dominating performance by Sen who
showed attacking skills winning it by 21-17, 21-13 to move into the
quarterfinals. He will take on Heo K-H of South Korea.
Sourabh Verma went down in two straight games to Kenta Nishimoto
of Japan. The Indian did not give a fight losing it by 12-21, 9-21 to be
knocked out. His brother Sameer Verma played brilliantly in the first game-winning it by 21-16. He then lost the 2nd game by 12-21 before
retiring due to an injury. Sameer was taking on SH Rhustavtivto of Indonesia.
In the women’s singles, PV Sindhu defeated Line Christophen of
Denmark in two straight games. The first game was a close-fought one before
Sindhu won it 21-19. It was a dominating display of badminton in the second
game-winning it by 21-9 to move into the quarterfinals. She will take on Busan
Ongbamrunpghan of Thailand. Sindhu won her previous match against Thai player
in last week’s Denmark Open.
Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj RankiReddy defeated Indian
counterparts Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun in a thrilling three games. The young
Indian pairing of Kapila and Arjun stunned the experienced pair winning the first
game by 21-15. RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty fought back strongly winning the second
game by 21-10 to force the match into the decider.
The decider was a very close affair as both pairs fought for
each point, but Reddy and Chirag held their nerves to win the third game by
21-19 to move into the quarterfinals. They will face A Chia and Soh W Y of
Malaysia.
The mixed doubles pairing of RankiReddy and Ashwini Ponnappa
went down fighting to 2nd seeded P Jordan and Oktavanti in thrilling games. The Indian pairing won the first game easily by 21-15. It was
a strong comeback by the Indonesian pair winning the 2nd game by
21-17.
The third and deciding game was a closely fought affair as
both pairs fought for each point before the Indonesian pair held their nerves to
win it 21-19.
