ICC World T20 2021 Super 12 Group 1: South Africa proves too hot for West Indies
The South Africa team showed their mettle as they defeated defending Champions West Indies in a one-sided affair played at Dubai International Stadium, Dubai on Tuesday.
South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided
to field first. It could have been an ideal start for Africa as Markrarm missed
a golden run-out chance off the very first ball. Lewis and Simmons played very
slowly in the first three overs scoring just 6 runs. After the initial cautious
start, Lewis blasted away Markram for 18 runs keeping the momentum going. On other
hand, Simmons struggled to time the ball. Lewis showed intent in hitting
boundaries and keeping the momentum going for West Indies. At the end of the first
six overs, West Indies scored 43 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Lewis took the attack to
Shamsi keeping pressure on South African bowlers. Simmons looked out of sorts
as Klassen missed a catch chance. Lewis upped the ante and completed his fifty
off just 32 balls. The left-handed Lewis eventually was caught by Rabada ending
73 runs opening partnership.
Nicolas Pooran was promoted at number 3 and took the attack
to Shamsi before being caught at long-off by Miller. Simmons's struggle eventually came
to end being bowled by Rabada to leave West Indies struggling. Shamsi was taken
to the cleaners by Pollard and Chris Gayle. Dwaine Pretorius bowled a brilliant
18th over grabbing the wicket of Chris Gayle. Pollard was cleaned up
with a brilliant yorker by Nortje. Shimron Hetymer also fell while trying to
take the 2nd run. Pretorius held his nerves in the 20th
over grabbing wickets of Hayden Walsh Junior and Kieron Pollard to restrict
West Indies to 143 for 8 in 20 overs.
Chasing 144 runs to win, it was not an ideal start as Temba
Bavuma was brilliantly run out by a one-handed direct throw by Andre Russell.
Reeza Hendricks replacing de Kock showed intent putting West Indies bowlers
under pressure while Rassie Van der Dussen struggled initially. At the end of
the first six overs, South Africa made 42 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Hendricks and Dussen kept the
pressure on West Indies bowlers keeping the strike rotating. A superb diving catch
by Shimron Hetymer ended a good inning for Hendricks. Hendricks and Dussen
added 57 runs for the 2nd wicket. Aiden Markram looked in decent
touch right from the go while Dussen kept South Africa under control.
Markram showed intent along with Dussen keeping South
Africa’s chase under control. Markram reached his fifty off just 25 balls.
South Africa chased down the modest target with ease. Markram and Dussen put
on unbeaten 83 runs for the 3rd wicket.
South Africa 144 for 2 in 18.2 overs ( Markram 51*, Dussen
43*, Hosein 1/27) beat West Indies 143 for 8 in 20 overs ( Evin Lewis 56,
Pollard 26, Dwaine Pretorius 3/17, Maharaj 2/24) by 8 wickets.
For his figures of 1 for 17 in 4 overs, Anrich Nortje was
