ICC World T20 qualifiers Match 7: David Wiese’s brilliance stuns Netherlands

Thanks to a brilliant batting performance by David Wiese, Namibia kept their hopes alive of reaching the Super 12 stage with an amazing win over the Netherlands in the 7th match of ICC World T20 qualifiers played at Sheikh Zayed International Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus won the toss and decided to field first. Stephen Myburg coming to open the innings along with Max O Dowd started the innings keeping scoreboard ticking by hitting boundaries and taking singles. Myburg and O Dowd looked in fine touch before Frylink dismissed Myburgh trying to hit a tennis shot giving a simple catch to Baard. The Netherlands openers added 42 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first six overs, Namibia scored 45 for 1.

Roelf van der Merwe's promotion at number 3 did not work as he was dismissed cheaply with a simple catch to Scholtz at third man. Colin Ackermann came to the crease and struggled initially while O Dowd kept on ticking runs. Namibian fielding was not great as they dropped catches and run-outs. After the initial struggle, O Dowd took the attack to the opposition reaching his fifty off 42 balls.

O Dowd and Colin Ackermann upped the ante with boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking. Frylinck got rid of dangerous Ackermann with a simple catch to Erasmus. O Dowd and Ackermann added 82 runs for the 3rd wicket. Scott Edwards showed intent right from word go making life tough for the opposition. O Dowd struggled with cramps and was eventually run out for well-made 70. It was a superb batting effort by Netherlands batters to post a competitive total of 164 for 4 in 20 overs.

Chasing 165 runs to win, it was an ideal start for Namibia as Zane Green and Baard got the team off to a flying start with boundaries by Green. Klassen got rid of Green taking the inside edge onto stumps. Green and Baard added 34 runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first six overs, Namibia made 41 for 1.

After the field restrictions, the Netherlands put pressure back on Namibia batters with wickets of Baard and Williams. With run rate climbing, David Wiese showed intent right from word go taking on Colin Ackermann while captain Erasmus took on Netherland’s bowling. It was an impressive batting effort by Wiese and Ackermann keeping the scoreboard ticking. Wiese showed his experience completing his fifty off just 29 balls.

Erasmus kept on picking gaps along with Wiese. Klassen bowled a stunning 18th over keeping Wiese and Erasmus quiet. Van der Gugten eventually got the wicket of captain Erasmus via review for caught behind to end a brilliant 93 runs partnership for the 4th wicket. JJ Smit hit winning runs to help Namibia chase down this target with 1 over to spare.

Namibia 166 for 4 in 19 overs (Wiese 66*, Baard 19, Klassen 1/14) beat Netherlands 164 for 4 in 20 overs ( Max O Dowd 70, Colin Ackermann 35, Frylinck 2/36) by 6 wickets.

David Wiese was awarded the man of the match for his unbeaten 66 off 40 balls. With this win, Namibia registered its first win in World T20 history.
