All England Badminton Championship Day 3: Two Indian shuttlers confirm medals

 It was a historic day for the Indian badminton contingent as 2 out of the 3 shuttlers qualified for the semi-finals of the prestigious All England Badminton Championship 2022 played at Arena Birmingham on Friday.

Lakshya Sen made it into his first All England Badminton Championship semi-finals as his opponent Lu of China did not come to play and got a walkover. With this, Sen has been assured of the bronze medal that shows that Indian badminton is on the rise. He will take on the winner of Kento Momota of Japan or Lee Ji Zia of Malaysia.

The biggest upset saw the Pre-qualifiers Tresa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand stun the World number 2 South Korean pair Lee So Hee and Shin Seung Chan in three grueling games. The first game saw both players fighting for each point but the experienced South Korean pair took points in succession during later stages to win the first game at 21-14.

It was a closely fought second game as both players fought for each point. After trailing behind, Jolly and Gopichand saved two match points eventually winning the second game at 22-20. The third game saw the Indian pair producing a brilliant display of badminton to win the game by 21-15 to move into the semi-finals.

The World number 56 Indian pair performed against all expectations and stunning top-quality pairs. They became the first Indian women’s doubles pair to win a medal in the prestigious tournament. Their next opponent will Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu of China.

Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty went down fighting to world number 1 Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamujio in two straight games. The first game saw the Indian put up a tough fight taking a 20-16 lead. Indonesian pair showed great fight to level score at 20-20 and eventually won the first game at 22-20.

The second game saw the Indian pair again producing some brilliant badminton but the Indonesian looked strong before winning the second game easily at 21-17.
