ICC Women’s World Cup 2020 Match 22: Indian team thrash Bangladesh to keep semi-finals hopes alive
The Indian women’s team registered an emphatic win over Bangladesh in a do-or-die match played at Seddon Park, Hamilton on Tuesday.
Indian captain Mithali Raj won the toss and decided to bat
first. Smriti Mandhana began brightly while Shafali Verma looked cautious
before launching an attack on Nahida Akther and Jahanara Alam with big shots
putting the opposition team under pressure. At the end of the first 10 overs, the Indian
team scored 52 for 0.
After the field restrictions, the Indian openers kept the
scoreboard ticking and made life tough for the Bangladesh bowlers. It was
unfortunate dismissal as Smriti Mandhana provided a simple catch to Fargana Haque
at square leg. The Indian openers added 74 runs for the opening wicket. Ritu
Moni struck twice in the same over getting wickets of Shafali Verma with a
brilliant stumping and then Mithali Raj provided an easy catch to Nahida without
adding any runs.
The Bangladeshi spinners kept the things tight not allowing
Harmanpreet Kaur and Yastika Bhatia to score runs easily. Fargana Haque
produced a superb direct hit to run-out Kaur. Kaur and Bhatia added 34 runs for
the 4th wicket. Bhatia looked composed with her strokes keeping the scoreboard
ticking. Richa Ghosh showed her positive intent hitting bad deliveries away for
boundaries. Nahida Akter struck Bangladesh with a lovely catch by Nigar
Sultana. Ghosh and Bhatia added 54 runs for the 5th wicket.
Yastika Bhatia looked composed and completed her fifty off
79 balls. After completing her half-century, Bhatia was dismissed caught by
Akther. Pooja Vastakar and Sneha Rana struggled initially before scoring
important runs with lovely boundaries. Both batters hit innovative shots to help the Indian team cross 200. Sneha Rana was eventually caught in the final over
caught by Ritu Moni. Rana and Vastakar added 48 runs for the 7th
wicket. At the end of 50 overs, the Indian women’s team posted 229 for 7.
The Indian captain Mithali Raj decided to bring Rajeshwari
Gayakwad in the 2nd over and troubled the Bangladeshi batters with
her sharp turn. Gayakwad struck dismissing Sharmin Akther taking the gloves of
Ghosh and onto Sneha Rana at slips. The Indian bowlers kept it tight not
allowing Bangladesh batters to score runs easily on a pitch that turned a lot.
Pooja Vastrkar got rid of Fargana Haque with a review for LBW. The umpire gave
not out but on review, it was overturned to out to leave Bangladesh in trouble.
At the end of the first 10 overs, Bangladesh scored just 19 for 2.
Mithali Raj kept aggressive fields making life tough for
Bangladeshi batters. Sneha Rana got rid of Nigar Sultana with a simple catch at
mid-on by Harmanpreet Kaur. Poonam Yadav playing her first match of the tournament
grabbed the wicket of Murshida Khatun with another superb catch by Kaur to
leave Bangladesh in deep trouble. Sneha Rana dismissed Rumana Ahmed via review.
The umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned to out as it the gloves
as Yastika Bhatia took an easy catch at short leg.
Salma Khatun showed intent against Poonam Yadav and other
Indian bowlers. Lata Mondal also looked in decent touch before Jhulan Goswami
provided the breakthrough for India with a lovely delivery to dismiss Salma
Khatun. Khatun and Mondal added 40 runs for the 6th wicket. Lata
Mondal looked impressive before Vastrkar her with a simple catch to Kaur.
Sneha Rana took 2 more wickets of Fahima Khatun and then
Nahida Akther. Goswami produced a superb yorker to dismiss Ritu Moni helping
Team India register an emphatic 110 runs win.
Indian women 229 for 7 in 50 overs ( Yastika Bhatia 50, Pooja
Vastrkar 30*, Ritu Moni 3/37) beat Bangladeshi women 119 in 40.3 overs ( Salma
Khatun 32, Lata Mondal 24, Sneha Rana 4/30) by 110 runs.
With this win, the Indian women’s team move to the third spot due
to a better net run rate. For her 50 off 80 balls, Yastika Bhatia was named the
player of the match.
