ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 2nd Semi-finals: England hammer South Africa to reach finals
The defending Champions England saved their best performance as they registered an emphatic win in the 2nd Semi-finals of ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Thursday.
South African captain Sunne Luus won the toss and decided to
field first. Shabnim Ismail got the breakthrough by dismissing Tammy Beaumont
cheaply with an easy catch to Trisha Chetty. Dani Wyatt put pressure on the
South African bowlers hitting boundaries while England captain Heather Knight
struggled to rotate the strike. At the end of the first 10 overs, England women
scored 44 for 1.
Right after the field restrictions, Khaka dismissed Knight
via review for LBW. The umpire gave it not out but on review, it was overturned
to out hitting the stumps. Knight contributed just 1 run and added 41 runs for
the 2nd wicket along with Wyatt. Lizelle Lee dropped a simple chance
to get rid of Wyatt. Wyatt completed her fifty off 56 balls keeping the
pressure on the South African bowlers. Nat Sciver also looked in decent touch
hitting boundaries and keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Ismail produced a sharp bouncer to dismiss Nat Sciver with an easy catch to Kapp leaving England in trouble at 71 for 3. Amy Jones joined in
with Wyatt and hit boundaries at will. Kapp dropped another chance to dismiss
Wyatt. Jones and Wyatt troubled the South African bowlers making life tough for
the bowlers. Kapp dismissed Amy Jones with another good catch by Tryon. Jones
and Wyatt added 49 runs for the 4th wicket.
Sophie Dunkley made the batting look easy and kept the pressure
on the South African bowlers. Lara Goodall spilled another chance to get rid of
Wyatt. Wyatt then took advantage and punished the bowlers reaching century off
98 balls. Wyatt got another reprieve as Shabnim Ismail dropped another chance.
Wyatt and Dunkley scored runs with ease making life tough for the South African
bowlers.
Wyatt was eventually dismissed for a brilliant 129 caught by
Lizelle Lee. Wyatt and Dunkley added 116 runs for the 5th wicket.
Dunkley also provided stability completing her fifty off 62 balls. Despite some
late wickets, Sophie Ecclestone played a brilliant cameo hitting boundaries in
the last over against Ismail to help England post a daunting total of 293 for 8
in 50 overs.
Chasing 294 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for South
Africa losing inform batter Laura Wolvaardt with a brilliant caught and bowled
by Any Shurbsole. Shurbsole struck again dismissing Lizelle Lee to leave South
Africa on the backfoot. South African captain Luus and Goodall tried to steady
the innings with some lovely shots. At the end of the first 10 overs, South
Africa made 37 for 2.
Kate Cross produced a good delivery to dismiss Luus. Luus and
Goodall added 36 runs for the 3rd wicket. The England bowlers never
allowed the South African batters to score runs easily. Charlie Dean got rid of
Goodall in her first over leaving them under immense pressure. Sophie
Ecclestone was bought into the attack and broke the backbone of the South African
batting line-up getting wickets of Kapp, Tryon, and du Preez.
Trisha Chetty and Ismail provided some resistance before
Ecclestone dismissed Ismail. Ismail and Chetty added 38 runs for the 8th
wicket. Ecclestone took the wickets of Klass and Chetty to bowl out South Africa
for 156 in 38 overs.
