ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 Match 23: South Africa and West Indies share 1 point each
Due to rains, the match between South Africa and West Indies was abandoned in a rain-curtailed match played at Basin Reserve, Wellington on Thursday.
The match was reduced to 26 overs a side due to heavy rains.
West Indies captain Stefanie Taylor won the toss and decided to field first. It
was an ideal start as Chinelle Henry dismissed Laura Wolvaardt with a good
catch by Dottin. Connell dismissed Laura Wolvaardt to leave the South African team
in trouble.
Chinelle Henry dismissed Tazmin Brits and South African
captain Luus to leave them in tatters at 22 for 4. The West Indies catching was
not great as they dropped 4 catches. At the end of the first powerplay, South
African women looked in trouble at 22 for 3. Right after restrictions, Brits
was also dismissed to leave them struggling.
Mignon du Preez looked in supreme touch hitting boundaries
off bad deliveries. It was an amazing batting display by Preez showing intent
and making life tough for the West Indies bowlers. On the other hand, Kapp also
gave good support to her. Du Preez scored runs at a quick pace making life tough
for West Indies bowlers. With the scoreboard reading 61 for 4 in 10.5 overs,
rain arrived. Du Preez and Kapp added unbeaten 39 runs for the 5th
wicket.
After some time, the umpires decided to call off the game
meaning that South Africa and West Indies earn 1 point each. As a result of
this, South Africa became the 2nd team in this World Cup to qualify
for the semi-finals along with Australia.
South African women’s team performed brilliantly in this
tournament so far winning 4 matches, 1 loss, and 1 no-result.
The semi-finals race is between three teams as India is
currently at number 4, England 3, and West Indies number 5. Indian team needs to
win their next match against South Africa on 27th March. If the
match between India and South Africa is a washout, India would qualify due to a better net run rate.
